NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday urged all parties to seize "new opportunities" to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks in a meeting on Iran with his counterparts from the United States, Russia, Britain, France and Germany in New York."At present, there are new opportunities in advancing the diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue," Yang said."All parties should use the positive elements in the current circumstances to further enhance diplomatic efforts so as to push the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue."Yang said that China will continue to play a "constructive role " in the international community's effort to find "a comprehensive, lasting and fair" solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.A statement issued after the foreign ministers' meeting called for an "early negotiated solution" to the Iranian nuclear issue.The foreign ministers are "ready to engage with Iran," the statement said.The six-nation ministerial meeting on Iran was held on the sidelines of a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."
ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other. ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's four-nation Eurasian tour has scored marked achievements and further deepened China-Europe cooperation, said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who described the visit as "a great complete success."Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU summit in the eight days from Oct. 2-9.Yang said Premier Wen's visit is aimed at boosting mutual trust through dialogues and promoting common development through cooperation.During his eight-day visit, Wen took part in more than 70 meetings, events and activities and paid a brief visit to Berlin as a guest of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the midst of his stay in Brussels.In addition to talking with leaders of the four countries and the European Union (EU), Wen also met with people from the local cultural, industrial and business circles and held joint press conferences or issued joint statements together with the leaders of the countries.Premier Wen vividly presented China's policies and positions, trying different angles, Yang said, which had further improved bilateral relations between China and the four countries and deepened China-Europe ties in the new historic period.
