A new report reveals both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are using facial recognition technology to scan driver's license photos as part of investigations. In addition to privacy concerns, critics point out facial recognition technology is both unregulated and can be inaccurate. “An innocent individual could become the target of a law enforcement investigation, simply because you have a glitchy computer system,” Jake Laperruque, with Project on Government Oversight, says.Laperruque is a privacy advocate for the watchdog organization. “I would bet most people in states don't want their photos being churned through an FBI database to search for random investigative targets,” he says. New research from Georgetown Law revealed the first known instance of ICE agents analyzing driver's license photos without any consent, which could put more pressure on Congress to act. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed concerns about the technology at congressional hearings this session. “More than half of American adults are part of facial recognition databases and they might not even know it,” expressed Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland). “It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, this should concern us all,” said Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). A common argument from anti-vaxx groups is that the vaccine can cause brain swelling in children. The two health officials clarified that in rare instances with underlying immune deficiencies, an MMR vaccine is not recommended. Dr. Messonnier says a doctor would be able to determine if a child fell into that category. Amid the national debate, a Texas state representative is now pushing for legislation that would allow more parents to opt out of vaccines, arguing to the Texas Observer that if a child gets measles, parents could simply use "antibiotics and that kind of stuff" to prevent deaths. A family from Connecticut got quite the surprise when their 10-year-old son was called for jury duty.Fifth grade student Nick Dondero received the letter in the mail summoning him to show up.While the family found it a bit comical, they’re wondering how it even happened in the first place.Nick’s mom laughed about it and tucked it away.“Two, three weeks later, I’m going through to pay bills and I’m like ‘oh my gosh, I never sent this back,” she said.Each year, more than 550,000 people in Connecticut are selected for jury duty.The Connecticut Judicial Branch gets a list of names from four places: The Dept. of Motor Vehicles, the Dept. of Labor, Registrar of Voters, and the Dept. of Revenue Services.The list of names the Judicial Branch gets from Revenue Services does not include the date of birth. That is where Nick’s name came from and why he was summoned.“I was wondering what if I don’t go, I wanted to know if that was going to be a problem,” Nick said.It wasn’t a problem.The Judicial Branch said the Dondero family did the right thing. They checked a box on the summons letter saying he was underage and sent it back.Now, 10-year-old Nick is in the clear and does not have to report for jury duty. 1225

After 32 agonizing years, Viola's son, Danny, was being released from prison. "I knew in my heart that he couldn't kill nobody," she said.Anxiously waiting with Viola were attorneys Solomon Radner and Madeline Sinkovich from Excolo Law and Claudia Whitman of the National Capital Crime Assistance Network. Fifteen years ago, Danny Burton wrote a letter to Claudia, telling her about his case and that he was innocent. Claudia, who volunteers all of her time to investigate wrongful conviction cases, asked the attorneys to take a look at the case. The law team also investigated, talked to witnesses, and found a prisoner who would eventually sign an affidavit that named the real killers of the 1987 murder of Leonard Ruffin in Detroit."There was a lot of witness intimidation," said attorney Madeline Sinkovich, who added that young witnesses were mistreated by police to get statements. When a tearful Danny Burton walked out of prison, he gave his mother a long embrace. "I'm really shocked," Danny said while appearing to be in a state of disbelief. He wanted to see the rest of his family, but not everyone is still around. Danny's father died years ago from a heart attack. Viola said he just couldn't take the fact that his son was innocent but locked away. Danny's sister passed away last year.
