The mad scramble between Thanksgiving and Christmas just got six days shorter.Black Friday once again kicks off the start of the holiday shopping season. But with six fewer days than last year, it will be the shortest season since 2013 because Thanksgiving fell on the fourth Thursday in November — the latest possible date it could be. That means customers will have less time to shop and retailers will have less time to woo them.Adobe Analytics predicts a loss of billion in online revenue from a shortened season. Still, it expects online sales will reach 3.7 billion, up 14.1% from last year’s holiday seasonThe National Retail Federation, the nation’s largest retail trade group, baked the shorter season into its forecast, but it says the real drivers will be the job market. It forecasts that holiday sales will rise between 3.8% and 4.2%, an increase from the disappointing 2.1% growth seen in the November and December 2018 period that came well short of the group’s prediction.Last year’s holiday sales were hurt by turmoil over the White House trade policy with China and a delay in data collection by nearly a month because of a government shutdown. This year’s holiday forecast is above the average holiday sales growth of 3.7% over the previous five years.NRF expects online and other non-store sales, which are included in the total, to increase between 11% and 14%, for the holiday period.Black Friday is expected to once again be the largest shopping day of the season, followed by the last Saturday before Christmas, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all types of payments including cash and check. Thanksgiving Day isn’t even on the top 10 holiday shopping days, according to MasterCard. The 2019 holiday season will be a good measure of the U.S. economy’s health. Many retail CEOs describe their customers has financially healthy, citing moderate wage growth and an unemployment rate hovering near a 50-year low.“The overall picture is positive,” said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners, a retail consultancy. “People are spending out of positive cash flow as opposed to borrowing.”Economic growth has moderated since earlier this year, with growth at just 1.9% in the July-September quarter, down from 3.1% in the first three months of the year. Analysts blame at least part of that on the U.S.-China trade war, which has forced many companies to delay plans to invest and expand. That’s left consumers as the main drivers. So far, Americans have kept up their spending, allaying fears of a recession. With more holiday deals happening earlier to compensate for the late start, many have already started to shop. More than half of consumers have already started their holiday shopping and nearly a quarter of purchases have already been made, according to the annual survey released by the NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics. The survey of 7,917 adult consumers was conducted Oct. 31 through Nov. 6.“This is further evidence that the holiday season has grown far beyond the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of NRF, in a statement. 3173

The Los Angeles sheriff says gun shops are not essential businesses and he ordered them to stop selling to the public. The move by Sheriff Alex Villanueva on Tuesday enraged Second Amendment advocates, who said they planned to challenge it in court. Los Angeles County, the nation’s largest county with 10 million residents, enacted a stay-at-home order last week requiring all nonessential businesses to close. The sheriff says what he described as a “loophole” allowed gun shops to stay open and many attracted long lines of customers. Villanueva said the order was only meant to keep open businesses that support police departments and other security organizations.California is under a "stay-at-home" order amid the spread of coronavirus. The order requires non-essential businesses to effectively close in order to slow the spread of the virus. 862

The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for an immediate ban on all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The group adopted the sweeping stance at a policy-making meeting in San Diego. It aims to lobby for state and federal laws, regulations or legal action to achieve a ban, but the industry is sure to fight back. The AMA cited a surge in underage teen use of e-cigarettes, which typically heat a solution that contains nicotine.“It’s simple, we must keep nicotine products out of the hands of young people.” Dr. Patrice Harris, AMA’s president, said in a statement. The doctors’ group said a separate health issue also prompted its action — the recent U.S. outbreak of lung illnesses linked to vaping. Most of those sickened said they vaped THC, the high-inducing ingredient in marijuana, not nicotine. Officials believe a thickening agent used in black market THC vaping products may be a culprit. The outbreak has “shined a light on the fact that we have very little evidence about the short- and long-term health consequences of e-cigarettes and vaping products,” Harris said. About 2,100 people have gotten sick; 42 have died. The AMA has previously sought bans on e-cigarette flavors and ads. Some observers say the AMA’s position is flawed and has little chance of achieving a sweeping ban.“I would be 100% with the AMA if they were seeking a ban on all tobacco products that are smoked, including e-cigarettes,” said Jonathan Foulds, a tobacco addiction specialist at Penn State University. “But right now, nicotine electronic cigarettes are competing with and replacing the most harmful legal product in this country.”Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, a pro-vaping advocacy group, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made clear that its focus “is not store-bought nicotine vaping products, but illicit contaminated THC oil cartridges sold by drug dealers.”“It would be a mistake for adult smokers and their families to listen to these misguided prohibitionists, as the evidence continues to indicate that adult smokers who switch to nicotine vaping products greatly improve their health,” Conley said. The AMA policy calls for a ban of vaping products not approved to help people quit. But so far, none have been reviewed or approved for that use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Stephanie Caccomo, an FDA press officer, said the agency is “committed to doing everything we can to prevent kids from using tobacco products and will continue to develop a policy approach that aligns with that concern.”Juul Labs, the nation’s biggest e-cigarette maker, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.E-cigarettes first appeared in the U.S. more than a decade ago and have grown in popularity despite little research on their long-term effects. The FDA has been widely criticized for repeatedly pushing back its own deadline to begin reviewing thousands of vaping products on the market, at one point until 2022. The deadline is now next May.___AP writer Matthew Perrone in Washington contributed to this report.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. That scene from “Friends” when we find out Ross is still a patient at his pediatrician’s office is getting more common for young adults. One reason is young adults can stay on a parent's insurance until they are 26 years old so it's easier and more affordable to stick with the same doctor. There are downsides though.“If they start to get medical conditions, high blood pressure, hypertension, adult onset diabetes, those more … adult medical conditions, that’s an appropriate time to say, ‘hey maybe it’s time to transition to an adult provider,’ ” said Dr. Christina Johns with PM Pediatrics. The pediatric emergency physician says one benefit of staying on with a pediatrician longer is the patient continues to see someone familiar with their medical history, especially for those with chronic childhood health issues. And she says it prevents the young adults from moving into another trend she's noticing — relying solely on emergency room and urgent care only.“There really does seem to be a large group of adults who use those places as their primary care,” the pediatrician said. “It’s really important to have a relationship with a primary care doctor.”Johns says when young adults become parents and when women need regular OB/GYN care, those are also appropriate times to transition away from a pediatrician. The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages transitioning away from pediatric care solely based on age. Their position is that it’s a decision between a patient and their doctor. It should take into account meeting the needs of the patient and the abilities of the doctor. 1606
