A 5-year-old boy with a brain tumor will get back his bejeweled replica wrestling belt after a pair of repentant thieves learned of his plight. For the Vicks of Seaford, Delaware, professional wrestling is "a family affair," according to Timothy Vick Sr., whose son Timmy, who has autism, was diagnosed with the tumor in October. "It's just a big family thing."Timmy's parents sought to soften news of the illness by saving money to purchase a special gift for the boy: a replica WWE championship title belt.To make the belt appear more authentic, the parents connected via Facebook with belt designer Sergio Moreira in Washington.Moreira said he offered to do work free of charge, replacing the plastic gems with cubic zirconia and thickening the plates."It'll be as close to the original belt that he sees on TV every say than any other belt he could buy in the market," Moreira said. The Vicks shipped the belt across the country, with the package being left on Moreira's porch earlier this week. His door view camera then captured two thieves stealing the package. But days after police released images of the thieves and local media told Timmy's story, the two women returned to Moreira's home with the belt and a four-page handwritten note of apology."They said they were homeless drug addicts and thought they could make a few extra dollars off of whatever was in the boxes," he recalled."I could see the look on their faces, that they were very, very sad and they had been crying."Moreira said he hugged the women and asked them to take care.He said he would be hesitant to file charges as long as the women seek help."I don't see any other way to do it because everybody has something in their lives they're dealing with," he said. The note from the women said, "We are so sorry for taking your stuff. Never in a million years would I have stolen from a sick five-year-old myself and am ashamed of what I did."The Edgewood Police Department in Washington posted a photo of the wrestling belt on Facebook this week with the message, "Talk about restoring your faith in humanity!" 2095

This week people across the country are enjoying time with family and celebrating the day the Native Americans and pilgrims sat down for a meal together. But the history of Thanksgiving, and the relationship between the two groups, is not that simple.“There was a lot of cultural misunderstanding, and there was some just flat out theft, and murder, and those things happened too,” said Tressa Brown with the Kentucky Heritage Council.Brown says what's taught in schools often romanticizes the first Thanksgiving and fails to acknowledge the wrongdoings against American Indians.“The stories that we perpetuate tend to make at least the dominant culture feel good, not so much for the other cultures. This is not a day of Thanksgiving for native people,” said Brown. She says Native Americans traditionally give thanks every day, rather than one set day each year. A part of Brown’s work includes traveling to schools to educate students and teachers about appropriate ways to teach and celebrate the holiday.“I think it's really important that kids be taught respect for those cultures, respect for what is sacred among other people. And not to denigrate it by dressing up and, you know, hitting your hand over your mouth to make noise and speaking in broken English,” said Brown. Brown says many don't realize that Native Americans are modernized, and they live just like everyone else.“The American Indian cultures, multiple, are vibrant, alive, thriving,” said Brown. Right here in Kentucky there is a rich Native American history. So Brown says this Thanksgiving take time to read up on the culture, and put a stop to hurtful stereotypes.“Respect is due, respect for that history, and those people is due,” said Brown. She says there are groups in America who are making an effort to acknowledge the history of Native Americans and trying to make amends.Brown tells LEX 18 the Indigenous Peoples Day movement is one example of that. 1949

A Lebanon, Indiana, mother is upset after she says her kids were denied breakfast and "lunch shamed" because they didn't have enough money on their account.Shaina Lawson says her 2nd and 5th grade daughters came home crying on Thursday from Harney Elementary School after she says the cafeteria worker denied them breakfast."You should never take food away from an innocent child," Lawson said. "It's awful."Lawson didn't put more money on their accounts in time and says their food was taken away from them in front of everyone. "The lady took their food from them in front of everyone in the lunch room and told them because they didn't have money on there that they were not allowed to eat," Lawson said. "There were kids snickering in the back of the line, made them feel very uncomfortable. I can only imagine how they were feeling."While students are not allowed to buy anything when there's no money on their account, Lebanon Community Schools says students have an alternate menu option available to them. When a student's balance is low, the schools notifies the parents twice a week. Schools send home a letter explaining the process of applying for free or reduced price meals when a student's balance goes in the negatives. "But before we could put money on there, they decided it was ok to snatch away my kids breakfast both of them in front of everyone," Lawson said. Some schools in Central Indiana, like the Greenfield Central Community School Corporation, have changed their policies to prevent what's called "lunch shaming."Lebanon Community Schools says they are reviewing their policies and procedures to ensure students and families are being served and welcome the opportunity to assist families with questions regarding food services and payment. 1782
