SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State's scheduled football game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program. The Mountain West Conference is declaring the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday. The Aztecs (3-2), who were coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday, will now hold onto the Old Oil Can trophy for another year after beating Fresno State, 17-7, last season in San Diego. The Bulldogs (3-1) had their planned game Saturday against San Jose State canceled on Friday, also due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs program."We are disappointed about the game on Friday being canceled due to COVID issues but the health and safety of our student-athletes is most important," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "We will actively search for a game this weekend because our coaches, student-athletes and staff want to play."We have reached out to the conference office and the Pac-12 that we are actively looking for a game. We will have to see how testing goes this week for all of the schools in our conference and the Pac-12."Fresno State athletic director Terry Tumey said "in partnership with Mountain West Conference leadership and the leadership at San Diego State, we explored every alternative solution we could identify in order to play the game on its scheduled weekend. Unfortunately, there was not a path forward to do so within our defined framework."San Diego State's next scheduled opponent is Colorado State on Dec. 5 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney returned to Naval Station San Diego today following a nine-month deployment. Pinckney, along with a detachment from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75, deployed in January with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to the U.S. 7th Fleet/East Asia/Pacific region. The Pinckney crew in April joined with the U.S. 4th Fleet's Caribbean and Central and South America areas of operation for counternarcotics operations.``The sailors of Pinckney have helped make the United States a safer place to live,'' said Cmdr. Andrew Roy, Pinckney's commanding officer. ``I thank all Pinckney sailors and U.S. Coast Guardsmen who overcame many obstacles to make sure illicit narcotics will never make it into our homes, schools or communities.''During Pinckney's deployment, the crew of the destroyer -- along with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment -- recovered 9,800 kilograms of cocaine and 2,800 pounds of marijuana with an estimated wholesale value of 0 million. In addition, Pinckney conducted navigation operations and participated in a passing exercise with the Guatemalan navy.``A lengthy deployment is always challenging, even more so in the midst of a global pandemic that kept us all on the ship for the past six months,'' said Cmdr. Ryan Conole, Pinckney's executive officer. ``Our team was able stay focused and on mission, and we could not have done that without the support of our families and friends back home who were also dealing with an incredibly challenging environment on the homefront.'' 1598

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters has received more than 560,000 ballots, it was announced Wednesday, more than three times the amount received at this point before the 2016 election. With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file.Mail-in ballots were sent to all 1.9 million registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even to those who had not requested one. Nearly a quarter of those have already been processed."Within minutes after the polls close at 8 p.m. on election night, the results for those early returns that were mailed in or deposited at drop- off locations before election day are counted," the registrar's office tweeted. For those who prefer to vote in person, the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Voters also have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person San Diego-area polling places will be open for four days instead of one, Registrar Michael Vu said.Vu has announced that his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely. An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.Voters are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance."We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home," Vu said. "Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. The sooner we receive your ballot, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3."Voters can return their marked ballot in the pre-paid postage envelope to any U.S. Postal Service office or collection box.Locations of vote centers were carefully chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance, officials said. Masks will be required inside, but residents who are unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside. However, officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations. 2629

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego. The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied. The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said. The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. He had a thin mustache and was last seen wearing a white shirt and a blue baseball hat.Anyone with information on the suspect or the whereabouts of the car is asked to call SDPD's robbery division at 619-531-2299. 1051
