Schools in the greater Denver area will be closed Wednesday as authorities search for a woman whom they described as armed and "infatuated" with the Columbine mass shooting days before the 20th anniversary of the attack.Local, state and federal officials are searching for Sol Pais, 18. She made "credible" -- but unspecific -- threats after traveling from Miami to Denver on Monday night, and is considered dangerous, said Dean Phillips, the special agent in charge of the local FBI office. After she arrived, she immediately went to a store and bought a pump action shotgun and ammunition, the FBI said Tuesday night.Pais is considered a threat to the community and schools, but there is no information on any specific threat to a particular location, Phillips said.Nearly 20 school districts will be closedNearly 20 school districts in the greater Denver area will be closed Wednesday due to security concerns just days ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. They include the Douglas County School District , Aurora Public Schools, Jefferson County Public Schools and Cherry Creek Schools. Columbine High School is in Jefferson County."There are many people that work diligently day in and day out ... that are making the very best decisions they can for the sake of the kids who are in schools each and every day," said Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader. "We want our schools to be a safe place for kids to learn."The Colorado Department of Education recommended that Denver area schools conduct lockouts and controlled release Tuesday after the alleged threats. In a lockout, exterior doors are locked, and school continues as normal.Columbine High and several schools in the area were part of the lockout, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tweeted. She was last seen wearing camouflage pantsAfter Pais arrived in the state Monday and purchased a pump action shotgun and ammunition, she went to the foothills, where she was last seen, Phillips said."Her comments, her actions that we have heard about from others tend to cause us great concern that she may pose a threat to a school," he added.Officials released an image of Pais. She is about 5-foot-5 and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, camouflage pants and black boots, authorities said.Authorities said they are being especially cautious because Pais' statements don't express a specific plan and were mostly spoken."She did make statements that were threatening to schools and she did purchase a firearm ... and that's why she's a credible threat," said Patricia Billinger, a spokeswoman with the Colorado Department of Public Safety.Anniversary of Columbine shooting is this weekThe 20th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School is days away.On April 20, 1999, two students killed 12 of their schoolmates and one teacher in a mass shooting at the high school in the town of Littleton -- about 10 miles from Denver."I know that this opens a wound, especially on an anniversary week, for those families who were most deeply impacted by this," Shrader said.At this point, there might not be enough probable cause to arrest Pais, but the federal and state attorneys' offices are working to develop appropriate charges, Phillips said. He said once they detain her, they will hold her for as long as they legally can.Authorities are asking for the public's help finding her, and tips can be sent to the tip line at (303) 630-6227 or emailed to denverfbitips@fbi.gov. 3486

TAMPA, Fla. — A new academic logo for the University of South Florida that cost nearly ,000 to design and refine is a huge dud with students, who have started a petition to bring back the old academic logo.Call it a bull brouhaha!USF students are not happy with the new school logo that’s already gone through a redesign and is now costing the bay area-university approximately ,000. The new logo is a bright arty bull with ornate “USF” lettering and it debuted in September 2018. And after the university received negative feedback on the logo, they made slight revisions this month. The revisions were made "to address feedback from our audiences, as well as campus communicators regarding evolving challenges with printing, signage and apparel applications," according to a spokesperson for the university.Calling it everything from “laughable” to a ripoff of finance company Merrill Lynch’s own bull mascot, students have started a petition to bring back the old USF logo: the “U” with bull horns.Other complaints about the logo introduced in September 2018 involve the new logo’s colors, which are a brighter green and yellow than the school’s classic dark green and gold. After paying nearly ,000 for a redesign — the changes include a shorter bull tail, slightly different leg placement, a connection of the front leg to the rest of the body — USF says they’re sticking with the new logo.Breaking down the cost of the logo, according to USF:The initial logo design done in September 2018: ,000Adapting the design and creating logo lockdowns for all college, schools, programs, departments and other entities across the University: ,450March 2019 design changes/refinements: ,835Check out a transparent overlay we designed to compare the old logo to the new logo. SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Firefighters in South Bend, Indiana, saved a pair of raccoons from a warehouse fire that started Sunday night. The raccoons were stuck on the roof of the warehouse when the fire broke out, but the ladders set up by firefighters allowed them to escape the smoke.Video posted by the South Bend Fire Department shows two ladders propped against a warehouse on Calvert and Franklin streets in South Bend. The raccoons can be seen safely descending as kids watching nearby erupt into cheers as the two furry creatures leap to the ground. The structure fire started Sunday night but hot spots reignited it Monday, according to 652

SARASOTA, Fla. — A Sarasota, Florida, police officer is at the center of an internal investigation after a video posted on social media showed him kneeling on a suspect's neck. The video — which the Sarasota Police Department said was tagged by other users on social media after the incident happened on May 18 — happened after police said they were called to the area about a domestic issue. It shows two Sarasota police officers working to place 27-year-old Patrick Carroll in custody while a third officer watches nearby. One of the police officers had his knee on the neck Carroll."As I'm yelling and asking why I'm being detained, he's putting his knee on my neck," Carroll said.Carroll says he suffers from asthma and scoliosis and was having trouble breathing."While he's saying I'm resisting, I'm just moving around so I can have circulation in my body and my throat," Carroll said.Carroll was arrested on charges related to battery and domestic violence. The cell phone video of the arrest was just posted to social media on Monday by Carroll's mother, Terria."I just want the Sarasota Police Department to know that I'm upset and I'm not going to stop until somebody has a reasonable explanation as to why he was detained in that manner," Terria Carroll said.Sarasota police said there was no complaint to them about this incident when it happened in May, and were unaware of what had happened until they were tagged in the video on Facebook on Monday."Utilizing your knee on someone's neck is not something that we train. It's not something that we authorize and it's not something that we stand behind," said Patrick Robinson, the deputy chief of the Sarasota Police. The police department said as soon as the police chief saw the video, the officer was placed on administrative leave, and an investigation was opened. The sheriff's office also released an aerial video that they captured of the entire arrest.</p>"We are bound and determined to do everything we can to rebuild the relationships as to what's going on in our community," Robinson said.Carroll's family says they don't want people to respond to the video with violence, but with peaceful protest to advocate for change."If we're yelling, they can't hear us, but if we meet them at belt level, we've got some loops, and we can connect," Terria Carroll said.Sarasota Police Department's investigation against its officer comes just days after a Minneapolis police officer was charged with third-degree murder after George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died while in police custody.Like the Sarasota incident, the Minneapolis police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, was also seen kneeling on the suspect's neck.Floyd's death sparked protests and unrest nationwide, including the Tampa Bay area. The controversy in Minneapolis also opened up conversations about race and police brutality. This story was originally published by 2924
