SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. The county's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in July, the same as a year earlier. There are still about 57,000 San Diegans who are unemployed. 1683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six new flu deaths have been reported this week in San Diego County as the number of emergency room visits due to the flu remain the same, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.So far this flu season, 308 people have died from the flu throughout the county. Those who have died range in age from one to 101 years old and almost all had underlying medical conditions.Also last week, 682 lab-confirmed cases of the flu were reported compared to 620 the week before.“The number of influenza cases being reported is still elevated, a sign that the flu is still here and making people sick,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “People should continue getting vaccinated.”So far this flu season, more than 19,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu have been reported, compared to nearly 5,000 last season. 874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the cost of living going up in San Diego, a lot of people are looking for ways to make extra cash. A new startup in San Diego called Bounce wants to help drivers maximize their income. "The drivers are the most important element," said CEO Mark Potter. Potter transformed the front of his law office into the startup space. He is a longtime fan of rideshare. "Before there was rideshare, I was hiring people off craigslist to give me rides," Potter said.His model for this new company is to focus on the driver and give them more incentives to want to stay and work for the company. "Our drivers are owners. They earn ownership in our company through stock options," said Potter. This stake in the company is one of the main reasons Pamela Bernier signed on to be a driver. Bernier said, "Working my own hours, calling my own shots, still enjoying the income and the people at the same time."Bounce also has a repeat customer option. Riders have the freedom to create a list and request their favorite drivers. They also have the luxury to arrange future rides in advance.  According to the company, this provides a safer environment for both the rider and driver and also gives the driver a more consistent cash flow. "I could bounce you here, I can bounce you there, I bounce you home, where you wanna bounce let's go," said Bernier. Uber and Lyft are two other companies dominating the rideshare space. According to Lyft, 68% of drivers are primary earners of their household, and so far in 2018, Lyft passengers also spent an additional million on local businesses in town. According to Uber, rideshare and delivery drivers in California took home more than .97 billion in gross revenue for 2017. Bounce is set for a September launch, and the company is currently interviewing drivers. They require in-person interviews and background checks for each driver. They are also in the process of putting in a panic button option in the app for riders to feel safer during their ride. "We envision is that our company will be very successful with loyal drivers that put Bounce first. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility.For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933
