BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China values its traditional friendship with Zimbabwe and hopes to push forward relations between the two countries as well as the two armed forces, said Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie here on Sunday.Liang made the remarks in a meeting with Zimbabwean Commander of Defence Forces Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.Liang hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. He reaffirmed that his country would continue to stick to the one-China policy and was willing to further enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces.He also said Zimbabwe attached great importance to cooperation with China, and hoped to strengthen friendly cooperation with China within the framework of China-Africa Cooperation Forum.Earlier Sunday, Chiwenga also met with Chief of the General Staff of the PLA Chen Bingde.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry.The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.
