LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Police arrested two people after they found an infant lying in a Laurel County roadway Thursday morning.According to the Laurel County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a complaint of a woman running down Vaughn Ridge Road at 3:15 a.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they found a woman who appeared to be under the influence and an infant in the roadway. The temperature at the time was 35 degrees, and the infant was wearing what police described as "minimal clothing."The five-and-a-half-month-old boy was checked out by EMS.When officers went to the woman's home, they found the father of the child and noted he also appeared to be under the influence of an "unknown substance." The temperature inside the resident was 60 degrees. Child welfare removed both the infant and their older sibling from the home.Destiny Dawn McQueen, 21, and Michael August, 49, were both charged with wanton endangerment, endangering the welfare of a minor and public intoxication. Police also charged McQueen with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.Police sent both to the Laurel County Detention Center. This story was originally published by 1174

Images in this story may be disturbing for some viewers.PUEBLO, Colo. — If you've ever felt like playing with fireworks, and maybe doing so after a few drinks, you might want to pay attention to this man's cautionary tale. For the past six months, electricity estimator Trevor Tate has been re-learning how to use his hand.“I use my hand ten hours a day all day, every day at work,” Tate said. “I type … take notes, crunch numbers.” That's because while lighting fireworks on New Year's Eve, Tate did something he now calls stupid."I caved to peer pressure and decided that I would hold the launch tube and fire a firework from my hand out of the launch tube and up into the air, and it would be a joyous event,” he said. “Well, the joyous event turned into one of the worst nights of my entire life."Instead of launching up into the air, the explosive fired downward, and through his right hand.“I remember my hand coming all the way back like this and me telling myself, ‘wow that didn't feel right, felt like a lot of pressure.’ I felt pain in my elbow and that was it, nowhere else,” Tate said. “And then I looked down at the back of my hand and the whole back of my hand in this area was white — just like bright white. And I’m like, ‘something has happened.’ ”He soon realized his hand was barely still attached. Doctors at two different hospitals that night told him he may lose his hand. But he was soon put in touch with Dr. Benson Pulikkottil at Denver's Swedish Medical Center.“It was a pretty shocking injury,” Pulikkottil said.Shocking, but something he believed he could fix. He attached Tate's hand to the tissue on his chest so blood could flow from his chest into his hand. A piece of skin from his chest now covers the underside of his hand. The doctor's advice this holiday?“Avoid alcohol during this time,” said Pulikkottil, the medical director of Burn & Reconstructive Centers of Colorado at Swedish Medical Center. “Don't cloud your judgment. These injuries, when they happen in a millisecond, you've now changed your life forever.”"The way I feel about fireworks now is … I probably won’t go outside and enjoy our country's pastime of blowing up fireworks,” he said. “It’s done enough. Trauma, inside of my head … I don't like loud noises anymore.”Instead, the electricity estimator might work on his rehab exercise, adding to the progress he's already understandably proud of."You look them in the eye and shake with your right hand. And I can do that now,” Tate said, “where before I couldn't.” 2536

It’s a rift that some women feel when they go to the salon: women with short hair, simple cuts still end up paying more than men, even if the time it takes for the haircuts is the same.A new trend, though, aims to change that. Across the country, new gender-neutral salons are charging by the minute and not the gender. At Bee Sweet Salon giving unique cuts is nothing new, but how they price them is cutting edge."Our salon is gender-free, especially when it comes to pricing," said owner Dani Bee.Clients at the Bee Sweet Salon pay by the time spent in the chair, not by their gender."It's an arbitrary way to price a haircut," said Bee. On average, women pay about for a cut, while a man pays on average, according to The Beauty Association.Emily Hope Dobkin was tired of paying more for her haircuts than her husband was paying for his. She said the time they spend in the chair was the same. "The price would go up every year, and I was like maybe. I shouldn't be getting my haircut this often because I can't afford it," Dobkin said. It’s not just haircuts that are priced by gender. The Pink Tax has brought to light the extra money women pay for products such as razors, shampoo, clothes, dry cleaning and more."It allows us to see where things are gendered and where they don't need to be," said hair stylist Abrean Sophia Marie.Abrean believes it’s about making everyone feel included. Besides giving great cuts, both Bee and Abrean say equality and inclusion is just as important."I just hope companies and salons do more of this because it's so important,” Dobkin said. “And it's 2020; it's about time." 1633

It's been a year of headlines about controversies at airports involving emotional support animals: Most recently, a passenger had to give up a pet fish that an airline worker believed the owner considered an emotional support animal, which wasn't on the airline's approved list.Later, the airline said it was sorry, and the fish should have been allowed, since it wasn't for emotional support. There have been so many incidents of people bringing animals for emotional support that some airlines have recently had to update guidelines on what is acceptable and what is not.The incidents have spurred Popeyes restaurant at the Philadelphia International Airport to sell an "Emotional Support Chicken" carrier, which is a box shaped like a chicken and containing, well, cooked chicken, for consumption while on a flight. The carrier was made available only at that Popeyes location on Dec. 18.The three-piece meal is a chicken tender combo, 949

LATHROP, Calif. – It’s a common trope for firefighters to rescue cats from trees, but you rarely hear of dogs getting into that kind of sticky situation. However, that was the case for a German Shepard in Northern California on Saturday. The Lathrop Manteca Fire District says the pup chased a cat up a tree and then found itself stuck in the high branches. Luckily, firefighters with the department’s Engine 35 were called to the scene and managed to rescue the dog. Once on solid ground, the crews provided oxygen and water to the adventurous pup.“Glad to hear that all turned out well for this pooch, and we are all pretty sure he’ll think twice about chasing cats up the next tree...nice work Engine 35!” wrote the fire department. 746
