CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego. Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president. The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible. In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points. The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego. The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. A close-knit community just a stone's throw away. “Anywhere you have ice, you can have curling,” McLachlan said. For more information on Curl San Diego, click here. 1348

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey passed away on Saturday, according to festival CEO Marian Goodell. He was 70 years old.Goodell made the announcement through a blog post on Burning Man's website. She says that Harvey suffered a massive stroke on April 4. He passed away peacefully on April 28 in San Francisco with family members at his side."Burning Man culture has lost a great leader and an inspiring mind," Goodell wrote in the blog post. "The loss of his presence in our daily lives will be felt for years, but because of the spirit of who he is, we will never truly be without him."The annual celebration of "radical self-expression" and "radical self-reliance" brings hundreds of thousands of people to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It first started in 1986 when Harvey and his friend Jerry James built a wooden figure on a San Francisco Beach and burned it down to honor the Summer Solstice. 913

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — Twenty-eight local Marine and Navy veterans of World War II were honored during a sunset ceremony Saturday.Camp Pendleton honored the veterans with a 21-gun salute, bell tolling, and wreath laying ceremony as part of the 75th commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This annual event is one of the largest Iwo Jima reunions in the U.S. as the number of surviving World War II veterans begins to dwindle."It's just amazingly remarkable marines who've truly established the legacy of the marine corps on whose shoulders we stand as we continue to protect the freedoms of the nation," Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, said.Tens of thousands of U.S. troops fought Japanese soldiers during the island invasion from Feb. 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. It's estimated that nearly all of Japan's 21,000 service members and nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. 943

Carl Kasell, a fixture on NPR for more than 30 years on "Morning Edition" and later its quiz show "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!," died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.Kasell began his career at NPR as a part-time employee on "All Things Considered" in the mid-1970s, then became the news announcer for the first broadcast of "Morning Edition" in 1979.In that role Kasell became one of public radio's most recognizable voices. Yet after years of being associated with breaking news, he had the opportunity to showcase a lighter side of himself starting in 1998 as judge and scorekeeper on "Wait Wait," hosted by Peter Sagal. An early prize for winners was to have Kasell record the outgoing message on their answering machine. In a statement, Sagal called him "the kindest, most decent person I have ever known," adding that after listening to him for years, "Hearing him say my name, that very first time, made me feel like I had somehow made it." Kasell became "scorekeeper emeritus" in 2014.Kasell's interest in radio began as a teenager, and that extended into his time at the University of North Carolina. He served in the military after college, returning to take a job at an all-news station. 1236
