OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Oceanside is home to the oldest cafe on the historic Highway 101. Appropriately named Cafe 101, when you step inside, you take a step back in time inside a 50s-style diner filled with memories and history. Café 101 has been an Oceanside fixture since 1928 for one reason. "Location, location, location," says John Daley sitting at the counter. Daley should know for several reasons. He's a developer, a third-generation Oceanside native, and former owner of Cafe 101 and much of its rich history."At one time, this was even our local bus stop for Greyhound out in front of us," adds Daley. When Camp Pendleton opened during World War II, Oceanside exploded from 5,000 people to more than 12,000. Cafe 101 was not only a drive-in diner, but it also served as a trailer park. "So those people had to have some place to live, they have to have some place to eat, and some place to recreate,” explains Daley. “So, it was just a crazy time in Oceanside history."For those Marines, Cafe 101 was like a second home and the employees who worked there were like family. Years later, when Daley and his partners bought the restaurant in the mid-80s he would see those Marines, much older now with children and grandchildren, return to the cafe to relive memories."Me being a big talker, I love to go out and say high to as many as I could recognize, and thank them for their service, and tell their kids what a great job they did to make our country free," says Daley with a smile. Cafe 101 is pure nostalgia. From home cooked food to the stainless-steel tables, the red booths, and the table side jukeboxes. But what sets Cafe 101 apart is its symbolic mural on the south wall of the cafe. It’s been featured in magazines and newspapers all over the world. That mural is what makes Cafe 101 such an essential part of Oceanside. "It was kind of iconic in a sense," says Daley. "Which is really a 101-highway mural too. (KGTV) — Farmers in Oceanside are gearing up to harvest a never before seen crop in San Diego County: Coffee.“We have an aggressive plan to make Southern California the next leader in the super specialty coffee industry,” said Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee.He began working with farms in San Diego five years ago to start planting coffee in old avocado orchards.This summer, they will finally harvest their first crop.“We tried to choose the varieties that not only perform well, but have a certain flavor characteristic that the consumer really enjoys,” said Ruskey.Frinj has also been growing coffee in Santa Barbara, where they have already started harvesting the beans.Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the first local outlet to sell it. Their website has one pound of the Cuicateco grown by Frinj for 0.“If the coffee quality matches the price, that's all that matters,” said Jeff Taylor, president of Bird Rock Coffee.They recently sent the coffee to the website, Coffee Review, which gave the Cuicateco a 92 out of 100.He said he has been working for six months with Ruskey to get the coffee in his stores. He hopes to get beans from Oceanside as well when they become available in the fall.“I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge,” said Taylor of San Diego county’s potential as a coffee growing region.Ruskey is already ahead of him, planning to double the number of plants they have already in 2019.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. 1594

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- Multiple customers said a North County rental company refused refunds during the pandemic and only offered a full credit toward a future stay in exchange for removing negative reviews online.Lisa Janson is one of those customers. She lives in Pennsylvania and was excited for her March trip to California with college friends. Janson was first planning to stop in Palm Springs to spend time with her son and his family before driving to Oceanside.Once in San Diego County, they planned to stay at a property managed by Beachfront Only. The company operates several rental properties along the coastline.As the situation with the Coronavirus worsened, Janson canceled their March trip. They were able to get refunds on their flight and Airbnb in Palm Springs; however, she said when it came to their rental, Janson said the business did not budge. "I was just absolutely shocked. I was dumbfounded," Janson said.She first asked for a refund on March 10. She said all those traveling were older than 65-years-old. One of her friends also had a doctor's note, urging her not to travel because of her compromised immune status. Even with that information, Janson said Beachfront Only would not make any exceptions.She lost more than ,000. Others contacted Team 10 about similar experiences with Beachfront Only. One San Diego man said he lost more than ,500. Another woman said she had to cancel her wedding due to the pandemic. Beachfront Only was the only business not to issue a refund. She lost more than ,000.A week and a half after Janson first reached out to Beachfront Only, she said the company offered her a deal."We're going to offer you a 50 percent credit toward a future rental," Janson said. "This was probably our 10th email back and forth. The idea of renting with them…. I don't trust these people!"On April 6, Janson said the company decided to offer 100 percent full credit towards a future stay contingent upon removal of any negative reviews that may have been posted, and the bank dispute has been canceled." "It just pisses me off," Janson said.When you visit Beachfront Only's Yelp page, a "consumer alert" warning pops up saying Yelp "caught someone red-handed, trying to pay someone to write, change, prevent, or remove a review for this business." Team 10 spoke to three people who said Beachfront Only offered 100 percent credit on a future stay only if they removed a negative review.Legal analyst Dan Eaton said a business compensating someone to remove a negative review is not illegal, but could have long-term effects."Businesses should understand that what they do will have a reputational tail that lasts many months, maybe years beyond the pandemic. People are going to remember what businesses have done," Eaton said.Beachfront Only did not respond to Team 10's calls and multiple emails. "I'm not wishing anything bad on them. We would just never rent with them again," Janson said.Janson said she is working to dispute the charge with her credit card. 3021
