Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have released more people seeking asylum in the United States from custody, citing a shortage in space. The release comes as thousands of people fleeing violence in Central America as part of a migrant caravan are beginning to arrive in Tijuana, hoping to enter the U.S. and claim asylum here.Earlier this year, federal officials released several hundred families to relatives, church groups or other organizations due to statutory limitations on how long people can be held in custody."These people, they don't speak English they don't have any money, and they are in another country and they don't have a cell phone to call their relatives," said Magdalena Shwartz, who works with churches and ICE to help find places to stay until relatives can pick up those the government releases. For families detained by immigration authorities, under a settlement agreement and subsequent decision, unaccompanied children or families can only be held in custody for 20 days before being released while their cases work their way through immigration courts.Pastors at a church in Mesa said they recently received a call from ICE asking if the church could help at least one hundred people, who were dropped off Tuesday. Others were given a bus ticket and dropped off at a bus station in Phoenix."They don't have another option," Shwartz said. "They cannot keep the people detained there for a long time, because they are getting more people."Multiple attempts to seek comment from Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday's release were not returned. Those who are ultimately granted asylum by a judge are allowed to stay, while those whose applications are denied will be deported. 1747

In a holiday season that many of us will spend away from loved ones, Cheerios is bringing back memories of a simpler time with their latest commercial reboot. In 1999, the cereal was featured in a sweet commercial featuring a grandma talking to an infant sitting in a high chair. The grandma, played by actor Peggy Miley, was using Cheerios to map out where extended family lived, as the baby ate them.“I think you just ate Dallas,” Miley says at one point. The ad had a simple message, being together for the holidays.A video posted on TikTok by Cori Spruiell brought up the idea of a reboot.“I'm making myself cry over this Christmas commercial idea I just had. So, if you work for General Mills, please, please make this happen,” Spruiell says, before a quick recap of the old commercial and then outlining the new commercial idea where the grandma and baby, now grown, are together over Zoom because of COVID-19. @corispruiell Listen you guys I just really love emotionally manipulative advertising ?? #generalmills #cheerios #christmascommercial #fyp #foryou #WorkingAtHome? original sound - Cori Spruiell Cheerios agreed it was a good idea, and made it happen.“Our team was really excited when we saw her post because we felt like it was such a true insight on what is going on today,” says Taylor Roseberry, assistant brand experience manager, Cheerios, in a company statement. “In re-watching that 1999 commercial, it brought back so much joy. We felt really inspired by it. So, we quickly pulled a group together to figure out how we could respond to Cori’s video.”Miley is back for the 2020 version, along with the now-grown-up baby, Delfina Booth."I was too young to remember my experience filming the Cheerios holiday commercial, but I get the same warm feeling both re-watching the original commercial and participating in its recreation," Booth said in a statement. "I can't wait for fans' reactions to the spot because while I've grown up, the importance of connecting with one's loved ones has only gotten stronger."The 2020 version starts with a close-up look at an ornament with the 1999 commercial image, then later shows Booth and Miley having a video chat, while eating Cheerios. 2210
I flew down to Texas to help with the Biden/Harris bus tour, intended to drum up enthusiasm at polling locations. Instead, I ended up spending the afternoon calling 911. 1/ pic.twitter.com/gKAjv7gv85— Dr. Eric Cervini (@ericcervini) October 31, 2020 257
House Democrats have failed to override President Donald Trump’s veto of a measure that would have reversed the Education Department’s tough policy on loan forgiveness for students misled by for-profit colleges. The House voted 238-173 on Friday in support of the override measure, coming up short of the two-thirds majority needed to send it to the Senate. It's a victory for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whose policy on student loan disputes was in jeopardy after Congress voted to reverse it in March. It now remains in place and will take effect July 1.The resolution would have repealed the final rules related to discharges of loans for borrower defense to loan repayment and other circumstances and prohibit reissuing similar rules in the future, according to the Congressional Budget Office. 812
