A man suspected of killing a police officer this week in Newman, California, has been arrested, according to Deputy Blake Edwards with the Kern County Sheriff's Office.The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department announced that Gustavo Perez Arriaga was arrested this morning at a home in Bakersfield, California. Arriaga was arrested and will be transported to Stanislaus County. Arriaga will be charged with homicide.Adrian Virgen and Erik Razo Quiroz were arrested yesterday for allegedly helping Arriaga escape after he allegedly shot and killed Corporal Singh. Virgen and Quiroz were arrested for accessory after the fact to a felony.The 33-year-old police officer, Singh, pulled over a man just before 1 a.m. Wednesday and a few moments later called out "shot fired" over the radio.Singh was found shot by other officers and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.The Stanislaus County Sheriff said Singh was conducting a traffic stop for a suspicion of driving under the influence when the shooting occurred.Singh was a native of Fiji and joined the force in July 2011. 1110

A confluence of factors led to 52 people being shot, 10 fatally, in Chicago over the weekend, including gangs, drugs, an ineffective justice system and a season of hot weather that often ushers bloodshed into the city, the police chief said Monday."Despite the investments and progress in safety, weekends like this remind us all of the challenges that we face and that they are complex and profound," Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters.In addition to seeing gangbangers settle conflicts with firearms, officers in the northern part of the city witnessed "tensions related to the open-air drug market that's occurring on the West Side," Deputy Chief Al Nagode said.After some of the gang violence on the West and South sides spilled into other neighborhoods, Johnson said, police increased patrols to stave off chances for retaliation. Kristi Noem is grabbing attention for its slogan "Meth: We're on it."As part of the campaign, a video released on Monday features a number of people of differing ages and backgrounds saying "I'm on meth." Given the national attention the ad campaign has garnered, Noem's goal to bring attention to the issue appears to be working. "I allocated money for meth education and awareness," Noem said. "Right now, my team is accepting bids from media companies for a targeted meth awareness campaign. We need to be more active and intentional in teaching kids the danger of meth use and the affect it can have on their lives."The state also launched a website that includes information on where to find treatment centers and other resources to fight meth addiction.
