CARDIFF (KGTV) -- With just a little bit of planning, Sharon Belknap begins a free-hand sand mandala that will offer its message, briefly, to all who pass by on the bridge at Cardiff State Beach where the San Elijo lagoon meets the ocean.Watching her work is like watching a dance. The graphic designer and illustrator draws shapes using a small, inexpensive rake. She brings extras because often passersby find inspiration and ask to join her, a collaboration she welcomes. The connections she has made through her sand art, she says have added meaning to her creations.People also send her their photos of her artwork, asking to use them in their holiday cards. Each mandala has an inscription, such as: "You Are Loved," or "Only Love."One that resonated particularly was "Grateful for ____.""People were shouting their words from the bridge," says Belknap.Sometimes friends join her.Heather Nelson is a regular, and a longtime friend. The day we shot the story, Kari Prevost was joining for her first collaboration with Sharon."The sounds of the ocean, the beauty of the water," she says, "it's restorative. It rekindles a playfulness that's innate."Expressed on a canvas that will be washed away by the waves; the impermanence, Belknap says, is freeing and healing. Her son Chris Thompson, a 28 year-old Valley Center firefighter, died in an early morning crash on his motorcycle this 4th of July."I like to say he ascended," she says. The next morning, inexplicably, Sharon says she woke up feeling joy. She came to her spot in Cardiff before sunrise."The words just poured into me: 'Only Love.'The first person who walked over the bridge and saw her mandala tribute, took a picture of her, standing in the shadow of the bridge illuminated in the early sunlight.Belknap says Chris is in every drawing. She adds eyes, which are Chris's, to each one. "Being out here, creating these, I often ask Christopher, 'What do you see honey?' And he says, 'Mom, I see you.'"When this design is done, Sharon and her friends share a covid-conscious "butt hug," as she calls it, then take a moment to lift their hands to share it with Christopher, before sending its message out to all who are fortunate enough to see it before it's erased by the waves."You Are Loved," it says. 2274

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Two women say the same massage therapist sexually assaulted them at the upscale Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. They've now filed a lawsuit against the massage therapist and the resort for sexual battery and negligence, among other complaints."I'm emotional. I'm volatile. I have never been like that," says the woman. She asked that we not release her name because of the nature of the alleged crime. She says she's now struggling after a harrowing experience at the high-end resort. 527

CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Camp Pendleton marines preparing to deploy are leaving behind a piece of themselves for their children. Thanks to the American Red Cross Hug-a-Hero program the kids will have a doll of their parents to provide comfort during the long months. The dolls have a special message and a pocket for an audio recording. The Red Cross says the program is possible thanks to community donations. They've already provided 1,000 dolls to children this year.  487

CARLSBAD (CNS) - A Carlsbad man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly killing his roommate.Patrol officers responding to a report of a death in the 2500 block of West Ranch Street at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday found a 40-year-old woman dead in an apartment in the neighborhood near the intersection of El Camino Real and Tamarack Avenue, police said. Her name was withheld pending family notification.Detectives questioned the woman's roommate, 44-year-old Brehon Roy Quigley, then arrested him, Carlsbad police Lt. Jason Jackowski said. Quigley was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of murder.Police declined to release details on how the victim died and would not disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying."The investigation into what occurred and why is ongoing," the lieutenant said. "No additional information is being released at this time." 880

CARLSBAD (KGTV) - Among the businesses saying Trump's trade war is hurting is San Diego born JLab, a booming audio company competing with huge brands. The Silicon Valley-style company in Carlsbad is buzzing as you walk through the large modern rectangular door."This company was four people four years ago, but now we're 40." CEO Win Cramer said they have lived the American Dream, saying they're a scrappy business always fighting to get on top."We worked out of literally, a house, or a rundown office or an apartment building forever," he said. JLab competes against major brands like Bose and Beats. They found a niche and made a name for themselves, "We came out with some fun colorful designs that happened to be on trend."Cramer said innovation is their secret weapon."It gives you the option to really tune out on a plane, you push a button and the engine noise goes away," explaining one of their earbuds.Their newest challenge is Trump's trade war. Billions of dollars in tariffs imposed on China are going into effect, and while all of the design work is done in Carlsbad, 100% of JLab's product is shipped from China.Cramer was sitting on a plane when he saw the alert, "this news pops up on my phone that 0 billion in tariffs announced, I quickly perused the list and saw our tariff code that we import  80% of our products was on the list and I just had this feeling of oh gosh we're going to have to fight this battle that we don't know how to fight."He is bending every ear within reach to spread awareness of how this affects JLab and other American businesses and even went to Washington DC to plead his case.Cramer said no legislators were there, just staffers and no electronic devices were allowed into the room. He said there is a written record of what was said."It was the largest hearing in US history which in it of itself should tell you something and how folks are, at least businesses like us are taking this pretty serious," he said.Production costs could increase by 25% and with the holiday season upon us, he's running out of options, "layoffs or pay cuts being the last option, certainly not something that I want to do or think about or consider, but it's something we're being forced to consider."He hopes change is swift and those in power hear his plea.He said the company will find out in mid-September how big the changes will be, and will see impacts as early as October. Cramer added a lot of the burden will fall on the customer, as they will have to raise the products' price.JLab employs 30 people in San Diego. 2630
