(CNN) -- A Michigan lottery winner must share the million windfall with his ex-wife, even though they were in the process of divorcing when he bought the ticket.Richard Zelasko won an million Mega Millions jackpot in July 2013 -- after taxes and fees his prize was ,873,628, according to an opinion issued last week by the Michigan Court of Appeals. The suburban Detroit man and his then-wife, Mary Elizabeth Zelasko, filed for divorce in late 2011. The case had gone to arbitration, and they were waiting for the arbitrator's opinion when Richard Zelasko won the prize. The couple were married in 2004 and have three children. The arbitrator ruled that the ticket was part of the couple's marital assets and awarded million to the wife and divided the rest of their assets, according to the opinion. He said that the "marital property includes all property acquired from the date of marriage until the date of entry of the divorce decree," including property acquired during a separation. The court also cited the arbitrator's opinion that the winning lottery ticket was probably not the first that Richard Zelesko had purchased during the marriage and that "(a)s losses throughout the marriage were incurred jointly, so should winnings be shared jointly."It's true that Zelasko spent to buy the winning ticket; however, "the dollar spent was arguably marital money and, as such, a joint investment," the arbitrator said. The appellate court said it found no errors that would require it to change the award."It's very difficult to overturn an arbitration," said Michael Robbins, who's represented Richard Zelasko since 2015.Robbins told CNN that the couple had been separated since 2009.An attorney for Mary Elizabeth Zelasko told CNN that he would not comment on the case because it is confidential. The couple's divorce was finalized in 2018.Robbins said his client can appeal the ruling and is "considering his options." 1945

(CNN) -- An atmospheric river is moving to the West Coast, likely to bring menacing flooding, heavy mountain snow, and damaging winds.Atmospheric rivers are narrow corridors of the upper atmosphere that transport intense moisture from a large body of water onto land.Track the latest weather and holiday travel delaysThe Pineapple Express is a specific atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii and travels across the Pacific Ocean to the western coast of North America.Oregon and Washington will see the worst of the stormThursday through Saturday, heavy precipitation will move into Oregon and Washington. Coastal regions will become saturated from very heavy rain, with as much as 4-8 inches expected. The higher elevations of Oregon and California can expect heavy snow, with possible totals of 5-20 inches. Forecasts for the Cascade Mountains in Washington are even higher, with totals expected between 1-3 feet.Ice is also possible for portions of the Hood River Valley Thursday. Accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are possible, which could lead to dangerous driving conditions, tree damage, and power outages.Damaging winds up to 60 mph are expected along the coast, with 25-40 mph farther inland.Storm moves into California By the weekend, the system will move south into California, taking the heavy rain to places like San Francisco and Sacramento. The good news is that the system will weaken as it moves south. So, California will not receive as much rain as Oregon and Washington. Most locations in Northern California will pick up at most 1-2 inches of rain."The atmospheric river for the end of the week looks to be an AR1 in the central California coast and northern Washington, but strengthen as high as an AR4 in Central Oregon," explains Anna Wilson, field operations manager for the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CWWWE) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.Atmospheric river events are characterized by a rating scale of 1-5, with Category 1 being a low-end, primarily beneficial event, and a Category 5 being a high-end, primarily hazardous event. This scale, used by the CWWWE, takes into account both intensity and duration.According to the agency, atmospheric river events can sometimes produce 25-50% of the annual precipitation in some western US locations. They also provide much of the snowpack and water supply for California. 2397

Workers at a restaurant in Ohio refused to complete a catering order for troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol amid civil unrest over the death of George Floyd. The restaurant chain, Condado Tacos, closed its Columbus-area locations on Tuesday after workers accused the restaurant of firing them for not completing the order. Columbus has had its share of unrest since Thursday night, when protesters broke out the windows to a number of downtown businesses and government buildings.According to the restaurant, one of its restaurants received a catering order that was placed by the Ohio Highway Patrol, with a number of workers refusing to fulfill the order. The restaurant said that management communicated that workers who were uncomfortable with completing the order did not have to work on the order. The restaurant said that a few employees chose not to finish their shifts, and that no one will lose their jobs as a result of Monday’s incident. “Condado was built as a place for everyone, without judgment or fear,” the restaurant said in a statement. “A place where originality and being unique are embraced. We are also a family that cares for and about each other. From the first day we opened our doors, we have included all people as employees and as guests in the Condado world. We want to be clear that we stand against racism – always have and always will.”The decision to close on Tuesday affected six locations. It is unclear when the restaurants will reopen. An employee told 1512

You likely aren't planning to visit Chernobyl any time soon, but that doesn't have to mean you can't get a taste of it. A team of scientists from the UK and Ukraine have created a vodka distilled from rye grown in the exclusion zone near the site of Chernobyl's nuclear power plant. It's also made from water pulled from the area's aquifer. So, would you be insane to drink what they are calling 'Atomik' vodka? The makers say no, and that it’s perfectly safe to drink. The scientists, however, admit the grain starts out radioactive but claim the distillation process removes the dangerous isotopes. They even say they had a university lab run tests to ensure the vodka was safe to drink. They are hoping to release the vodka to the public in limited supply, where it will have to compete with liquors that were never radioactive. The Chernobyl Spirit Company says it will donate 75 percent of its profits to people who still live in the area. 956
