For the first time in its history, Sports Illustrated will feature a transgender model in its annual Swimsuit Edition.Sports Illustrated said Friday that 23-year-old Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio would be featured in the magazine, which is slated for a July 21 release.In an open letter published on Sports Illustrated's website, Sampaio said she was "excited and honored" to be a part of the upcoming issue."Being trans usually means facing closed doors to peoples’ hearts and minds," she wrote. Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw was on the defensive on Thursday after Variety Magazine published an interview with a former NBC correspondent claiming Brokaw sexually harassed her. Linda Vester, an NBC reporter for a decade from 1989 to 1999, told Variety that Brokaw physically tried to force her to kiss him and groped her on NBC property. She also claimed that Brokaw showed up to her hotel room uninvited. Variety confirmed that two of Vester's friends were told about Brokaw's alleged behavior around the time of the incidents. In response to the allegations, Brokaw sent a statement through NBC to Variety stating, "I met with Linda Vester on two occasions, both at her request, 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at NBC. The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda’s allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.”There are also no other known claims of sexual harassment against Brokaw. Vester told Variety that recent events at NBC, including revelations of alleged sexual harassment involving ex-Today Show host Matt Lauer, have prompted her to speak out. Vester told Variety that the sexual advances began four years after she began her NBC career during Pope John Paul's 1993 visit to Denver. "I’m standing there, and Tom Brokaw enters through the door and grabs me from behind and proceeds to tickle me up and down my waist," she said. "I jumped a foot and I looked at a guy who was the senior editor of “Nightly,” and his jaw was hanging open. Nobody acted like anything wrong was happening, but I was humiliated. I didn’t know Brokaw other than to say hello in the hall."Vester said that she was also asked several times in 1994 to have drinks with Brokaw. Vester claimed that Brokaw also called her, saying he was coming over. Vester said that 30 minutes later, Brokaw was at her door. "He walked past me and sat down on the sofa in my suite," Vester told Variety. "He puts his arm on the back of the sofa and he said, 'I like our rat-a-tat-tat.' I thought it was a bizarre statement."Vester added, "I could feel myself trembling. As I stood there, I asked in a frustrated and scared tone, 'What do you want from me?' And he gave me a look of annoyance like he couldn’t believe I didn’t get it. He said, 'An affair of more than passing affection.'"Vester left NBC in 1999 to anchor a program for Fox News. The June 26, 2015 ruling added to the day’s significance, which already has a decades-long history in the battle for LGBTQ rights.On June 26, 2003, the highest court in the country overturned a Texas statue making it a crime for two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct.In the ruling, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote “The petitioners are entitled to respect for their private lives. The State cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime. Their right to liberty under the Due Process Clause gives them the full right to engage in their conduct without intervention of the government.”Ten years later, on June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court issued their ruling on United States v. Windsor, stating that a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional.In that ruling, Justice Kennedy wrote, “DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) instructs all federal officials, and indeed all persons with whom same-sex couples interact, including their own children, that their marriage is less worthy than the marriages of others.”In 2013, 12 states and the District of Columbia recognized same-sex marriages. FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Air travel will take even longer than previously thought to return to pre-virus levels. That's the gloomy prediction from the air transport trade association or IATA. They are pushing their forecast back by a year, to 2024. That's when they say travel will make it back to 2019 levels. "A slower recovery will put more airlines in financial peril," a release from the trade association stated. "And, as we have said many times in these briefings, government relief measures are essential."In June, air travel around the world was down 86% compared to a year earlier. IATA says air travel recovery will take longer because of the resurgence of cases in many places including the U.S. 716

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Fort Myers, Florida, parent says there is such a thing as being overly cautious when it comes to COVID-19 safety.Lexington Middle School told Sheila Gayle’s eighth grade daughter to quarantine for 10 days because of what they thought were COVID-19 symptoms. But, mom says it’s just “that time of the month.”Her daughter went back to school today, but not before taking a trip to see her doctor after she reported feeling tired. The district required her to either quarantine until October 23 or show proof that it wasn’t COVID-19.So, instead of dropping off her daughter at school Tuesday morning, Gayle had to visit to Physicians’ Primary Care for a doctor’s note saying her daughter’s menstrual cycle caused the fatigue.“This what it’s come down to, so every month I have to come when she’s on her cycle? It’s just ridiculous at this point,” she said.Gayle says Monday afternoon, her daughter told the school nurse she had just started her cycle and felt tired. No fever, no body aches, just tired.“Just to have fatigue, because you’re tired? That’s unacceptable,” said Gayle.The nurse gave the student a form, indicating her fatigue could be related to COVID-19.A spokesperson for the School District of Lee County referred us to their website, pointing out students can return to school sooner if a doctor proves symptoms are caused by something other than the coronavirus.Gayle said she had two options. Either quarantine her daughter, which would also mean quarantine her siblings enrolled in other Lee County schools, or take time off work and get the doctor’s note. She chose the latter, hoping she won’t have to go through this again next month.“I just feel like this whole system needs to be re-evaluated,” said Gayle.The district said as of now students are not required to quarantine if a sibling has COVID-19 related symptoms.
