SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late. OSHA arrived and said we were in total compliance. It was a freak accident," said Jaha. The Hilton sent 10News the following statement: 1131

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly posed as a maintenance worker in order to burglarize residences across San Diego County was charged Thursday with burglary and other felonies that could have him facing more than 300 years in prison.Corey Henson, 45, is suspected in burglaries in San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon, Vista and San Ysidro that occurred between August of last year and this February.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim said Henson could face 339 years and four months to life if convicted of all counts, due to numerous prior convictions, which include burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. The prosecutor said the investigation remains ongoing into "several other incidents" Henson could be involved in.RELATED: Man arrested on suspicion of posing as maintenance worker to burglarize La Mesa apartmentsHe was initially arrested last Wednesday, but was released the following day after posting 0,000 bail. However, he was re-arrested Friday after police contacted him in La Mesa and he allegedly sped off, leading police on a chase that ended with him crashing into a pole, then running before being caught. He pleaded not guilty to all charges on Thursday, with a judge increasing his bail to million.Henson is due back in court March 2 for a readiness conference. 1296

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man stabbed his housemate to death in Chula Vista two years ago, then stuffed the victim's body into a barrel that he and another man dumped into San Diego Bay, a prosecutor alleged Tuesday, while defense attorneys maintained that the evidence against their clients was entirely circumstantial. Timothy John Cook, 54, is charged with the Sept. 30, 2017, murder of Omar Medina, 28, and co-defendant Derrick Spurgeon, 40, is charged with being an accessory for allegedly driving the boat used to dump the victim's body, which was located 12 days later inside the barrel, which had been weighed down by a makeshift anchor made of wire and cinderblocks. Medical examiners said Medina had been stabbed more than 60 times in the chest, back, neck and head. RELATED: Man whose body was found in a barrel had been stabbed 66 times; suspect pleads not guiltyDeputy District Attorney Cherie Somerville said in her opening statement that Medina and Cook both worked at a scaffolding business for Cook's younger brother and were living together at a home in Chula Vista. In a text exchange with his brother, Cook expressed annoyance with Medina over his drinking and sloppy household behavior, leading Cook to eventually kick him out of the house, according to the prosecutor. Sommerville also noted that Medina had recently come into a substantial amount of money via an ,000 settlement he received in a lawsuit. Medina's family never heard from him after Sept. 30, and filed a missing person's report soon afterward with Chula Vista police. Medina's unlocked car was found about a week later on Oaklawn Avenue, not far from the home he shared with Cook on McIntosh Street. Numerous belongings, including his computer and guitar were inside the vehicle. RELATED: Family of man found in barrel works to find closure, thanks Chula Vista PD for their effortsDuring that time period, Cook had told his brother that he was out of town in the Northern California city of Oroville, but Somerville said evidence indicates the defendant never left San Diego County. Defense attorney Kara Oien countered in her opening statement that there was no hard physical evidence tying Cook to Medina's death, and told jurors the district attorney was relying on circumstantial evidence to come to a false conclusion that her client killed Medina. The attorney said the prosecution lacked a murder weapon and witnesses to the murder, which allegedly occurred during the daytime hours of Sept. 30 at the Chula Vista home. Oien said Cook's agitation over Medina's sloppiness was far from indicative of a motive to kill and that Cook would have tried to get closer to Medina if he really wanted his settlement money, rather than kicking him out of their house. RELATED: Bodycam video shows officer confront accused killer of man found in barrelAccording to the prosecution, Cook enlisted Spurgeon's assistance on Oct. 11 to haul the barrel and dispose of it. Surveillance footage allegedly captures the men in a green Ford F-150 owned by Cook's half-brother, which is seen towing Spurgeon's boat from El Cajon to the bay. Somerville alleged that a barrel matching the one containing Medina's body can be seen in the bed of the pickup in the footage. She also said a search of the McIntosh Street home yielded additional indications that Cook was covering up the murder, such as removal of his home's kitchen sink and stripping down Medina's room, which was located in an attached building on the property. Oien said Cook was merely fixing up the home, and that he had an agreement with his landlord to make occasional repairs in exchange for lower rent. Spurgeon's attorney, Roland Haddad, said there was no evidence that his client had any knowledge of assisting Cook of disposing Medina's body, if Cook even committed the murder at all. The men exchanged phone calls on Oct. 11, but Haddad said there was no evidence regarding what discussions they had over the phone, nor what was said on the alleged boat ride when Medina's body was dumped into the water. 4056

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A prominent local civil rights leader called on the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Monday to fire a deputy who allegedly shared a "lewd and racist and vile" altered photograph of George Floyd taken from the viral video of the Minnesota man's death in police custody. The doctored image showed a nude male "porn star" kneeling on Floyd in place of Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as the detainee repeatedly protested that he could not breathe, according to NAACP San Diego Branch President Francine Maxwell. Floyd died on Memorial Day.The words "quit resisting" also were added to the picture, Maxwell asserted in a prepared statement.RELATED: Sheriff's employee removed after reportedly sharing vulgar image"The image was lewd and racist and vile and should disturb anyone with a shred of human decency," Maxwell said. "It is simply unacceptable (behavior for) a law enforcement officer."The deputy, whose name has not been confirmed by the Sheriff's Department, allegedly shared the photo via email, according to Maxwell. On June 18, he was suspended pending the completion of an internal investigation into the matter, said Lt. Ricardo Lopez, media relations director for the regional law enforcement agency."We were so disgusted that an employee may have shared such a vulgar image that within minutes we began to take action," Lopez stated. "Hours after being made aware of this incident, the employee was removed from his official duties and had his peace officer authority removed."In calling for the deputy's ouster, Maxwell also cited his shootings of suspects in 2005 and 2006, describing them as excessive and unjustifiable uses of lethal force. She said the lawman "must go" because "this is far from the first time he has shown himself to be an overtly racist and deplorable human being" and because "this (doctored-photo) incident shows he has clearly not changed his evil, racist and hate-filled ways and (that) he is a danger to all residents of the county."The sheriff's spokesman said the department's leaders "understand the public concern" over the episode and "want to bring the matter to a just conclusion as soon as possible." Lopez said."The Sheriff's Department does not tolerate any ... actions by its employees that are a detriment to our core values," Lopez asserted in a statement issued Monday. 2424
