SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A third gender option will be available for California drivers licenses and ID’s starting in 2019. The law, SB 179, was signed by Governor Jerry Brown in October. It will allow people to apply for a ‘non-binary’ gender marker if they do not identify as either male or female. “For me, it was surprising to see this change,” said Al Johnson, a transgender activist and member of Trans Family Support Services. Johnson is non-binary and uses pronouns they/them. But with that surprise, came excitement. “Not only does it mean we’re being recognized by society and the people around us but were also being recognized by government entities as valid and real people,” they said. Johnson says they know people who plan on changing their gender to non-binary, but so far, they have not decided to do it on their own license. “I’ve definitely considered it, but in the end I don’t think I’m going to,” they said. “I just came out to my parents and in my personal life I’m trying to navigate that.” The DMV’s website is encouraging those who want to apply for the change to schedule an appointment as early as January 2, 2019. 1154

Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On a clear, sunny day in February, the sound of a bell announces the arrival of Naval Commander John C. Witte as he boards the USS Annapolis. He's in charge of the roughly 160 sailors who serve aboard the submarine, one of several boats stationed at Naval Base Point Loma."Submarining takes a lot of mental toughness and these guys will work long hours but they'll do what it takes to get the mission done," Witte told 10News. As you can imagine space is limited on board, nearly every inch is utilized, especially in the command area. But that's not to say the crew doesn't ever use their eyes. The periscope is still something the submarine crew utilizes regularly. "We may want to look at what other ships are doing we may want to try to observe other navy's activity stuff like that," Witte said. Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers.
