SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego History Center is commemorating a landmark moment in the gay rights movement: the Stonewall uprising in New York. Fifty years ago, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village sparked a violent confrontation between law enforcement and gay rights activists. Although the riots happened on the other side of the country, the West Coast had a role in fighting for change. “If nothing else, it is a marker in historical time with a clearly defined before and after,” said Dr. Lillian Faderman. Faderman said Stonewall was “not the first time that gay people fought back.” She curated an exhibit called LGBTQ San Diego: Stories and Struggles, tracing the local groups that advocated for LGBTQ rights. The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis both advocated for gay rights in the 1950s and 60s. Faderman’s exhibit highlights their work, and that of individuals who called for change. The exhibit will be open at the San Diego History Center until next year. 1022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The public is invited to the inaugural Christmas tree lighting ceremony Saturday at the new Legacy International Center in Mission Valley.Dozens of workers made their last-minute touches Friday ahead of the center's tree lighting, which plans to pull out all the holiday stops."We'll have Christmas caroling out there, and Santa will be out there. Just social fun," Jim Penner, executive director of the center, said. Penner said Saturday's event is the first of a three-phase opening for the nearly 0-million hotel, theater, and attraction center opening next year. The center is the brain-child of San Diego-based televangelist Morris Cerullo, who made his fortune as a popular televangelist in the 1980s and 1990s."He [Cerullo] wanted people around the world to be able to experience the people that he got to know through his 70 years of travel to 95 nations in the world," Penner said. Penner told 10News the center was initially supposed to be a small ministry training center and possibly a dormitory. But with the availability of the 18-acre former Mission Valley Resort, they went big. The hotel will have 126 rooms, including 12 suites. The fine-dining restaurant is a steakhouse, which is next to the pool and spa. The attraction building has a domed, 4D theater designed by former Disney Imagineers. Audiences will get to feel like they're flying over Jerusalem in a ride created by the same designers who made Soarin' Over California at Disney California Adventure Park.Another attraction will be an award-winning, computerized dome, where people can digitally tour the world."As we get to know each other, the world gets smaller," Penner said. Before the council approved the blueprints in 2017, critics of the Legacy International Center feared that traffic would be a nightmare. But Penner said that the improvements they made on the roads turned out to have unexpected benefits. "We widened Hotel Circle the entire length of our property. We have 1000 feet of frontage there. And a nice benefit of that is when we had this last big rain last week, in the past, Hotel Circle would flood like crazy in front of the hook ramps here, and no flooding at all!"The inaugural Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department gave 10News a behind the scenes look at the specially-trained team that solves arson cases. Inside Station One is the elite and highly specialized Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST, made up of fire investigators, police detectives, ATF, FBI and a bomb squad. The team is dedicated solely to investigate arson. To be on the specialized team, MAST training goes beyond the fire academy. “You are wearing the hat of an electrical engineer, a scientist, a fire fighter, a report writer. We wear a lot of different hats and we have to be good at it,” said Captain James Shadoan. MAST spent the day with 10News demonstrating how they perform the task of solving an arson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There were about 20,600 students considered homeless in schools throughout San Diego in the 2017-18 school year, but the actual number is likely higher, according to the findings of a new state audit.The report by California State Auditor Elaine Howle concluded districts across the state are not doing enough to identify homeless students and connect them with the services they need for tutoring, transportation, and school supplies. The report also faulted the state Department of Education for "inadequate oversight."The audit was requested after Department of Education data showed more than 25 percent of California districts reported having no students experiencing homelessness despite the state’s ongoing homelessness crisis.RELATED: San Diego homeless count 2019: Data shows over 8,000 living on county streets or in shelters“We cannot serve them and work to improve their educational outcomes if we don’t know who they are,” said San Diego County Office of Education Homeless Coordinator Susie Terry.California uses a broad definition of homelessness under the McKinney-Veto Homeless Assistance Act. About 75 percent of students considered homeless are living in a household with two or more family units for economic reasons, a scenario known as “doubling up,” Terry said."Doubling up" is often a last ditch-effort to avoid life in a shelter or a vehicle, and a time when services are critically needed, she said.RELATED: San Diego County ranks fourth for number of homeless in the United StatesAuditors looked at the number of students receiving free and reduced-price lunches and compared that to research showing 5 to 10 percent of those students typically experience homelessness.Using that benchmark, the San Diego Unified School District scored well, with 8,129 homeless students and an identification rate of 11 percent.Districts with less than a 5 percent identification warrant further scrutiny and state oversight, the audit said. San Marcos Unified, Oceanside Unified, and Chula Vista Elementary District all had homelessness identification rates of 2 percent or less.RELATED: San Diego city council approves .9 billion homelessness planTerry said identifying homeless students can be a challenge because districts use different approaches, and families often don’t want to be identified. “There’s a lot of fear around what’s going to happen if the school knows we’re homeless,” she said. “There are fears around if child welfare will be called, if immigration will be called, if they’re going to be allowed to continue going to school.”Each school district is required to have a homeless coordinator, but the duties are often tacked on to another position, she said.“There isn’t always time and resources available for district liaisons to do the job they need to do around identification,” said Terry. 2856
