WASHINGTON, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a resolution on Tibet in gross interference in China's internal affairs.     The resolution neglected the remarkable and widely recognized progress in Tibet in politics, economy, culture and society over the past 50 years.     It also repeated groundless accusations against the Chinese government over its Tibet policy and voiced support for the ** Lama's separatist activities.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu urged the U.S. representatives Tuesday to follow the basic norms guiding international relations and stop pushing the bill on Tibet.     "The Tibet issue is purely China's domestic issue. The Chinese government and people, as always, oppose any country or anyone to interfere in China's internal affairs on the pretext of the Tibet issue," he said.     This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of feudal serfdom in Tibet.     Fifty years ago, the central government of China foiled an armed rebellion by the ** Lama and his supporters to block reform in Tibet and split the region from China.     On March 28, 1959, a new local Tibetan government was formed, freeing millions of Tibetan serfs and slaves, who accounted for more than 90 percent of the then population.     "Over the past 50 years, Tibet has undergone profound changes in political, economic and cultural sectors and millions of serfs have become owner of Tibet," Ma said.     However, with the backing of certain anti-China elements in the West, the ** Lama and his followers have continued to pursue either disguised or undisguised activities in an attempt to separate Tibet from China and restore feudal serfdom in the region.     On March 14 last year, followers of the ** Lama staged riots in Lhasa to put pressure on the central government. MEXICO CITY, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping left here Wednesday afternoon for Jamaica after wrapping up a three-day official visit to Mexico.     During his visit, Xi held talks with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and met with Senate President Gustavo Enrique Madero Munoz and Cesar Duarte Jaquez, president of the Chamber of Deputies.     Xi exchanged views with them on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     At a luncheon hosted by Chinese and Mexican entrepreneurs, Xi said fresh efforts were needed to further promote China-Mexico economic and trade cooperation amidst the current global financial crisis.     Mexico is the first leg of the Chinese vice president's six-nation tour, which will also take him to Jamaica, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Malta.     On his way to Mexico, Xi made a transit stop in Nandi, Fiji, where he held talks with Fijian leaders on the cooperative partnership between China and the island country.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- China Pacific Insurance, one of the country's largest insurers, announced Saturday that its net profit dropped 80.6 percent to 1.339 billion yuan (196 million U.S. dollars) in 2008.     The Shanghai-based insurer attributed the profit decrease to the sluggish stock market performance and the large amount of insurance indemnity after several natural disasters last year.     However, the premium income of the company rose 26.6 percent to94.02 billion yuan, said the firm in its 2008 annual report.     Its life insurance premium income increased 30.4 percent to 66.09 billion yuan last year, ranking the third in the domestic market. Its property insurance premium rose 18.7 percent to 27.88 billion yuan, making it the second largest among its peers.
