There's new concern about medical costs because of the coronavirus. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we were already seeing hospital costs rising.Insurance comparison website Quote Wizard looked at a decade of data and it determined the average cost of a hospital visit went up 36% to more than ,300 a day. In some states, the increase was higher.“Why that matters right now during COVID-19 is obviously there is a stress on the healthcare system with people being sick from coronavirus but also significant numbers of people losing their jobs,” said Adam Johnson, a Quote Wizard analyst. “Millions of Americans losing their jobs and when they're losing their jobs, they're losing their employer sponsored health insurance.” Rising hospital costs are due in part to uninsured and underinsured patients that receive care. However, there's another significant contributor that could be easier to correct.“In other countries where health care systems are a little more uniform, the administrative aspect is much lower, 1 to 3% of total healthcare costs, but in the United States, that’s around 8%,” said Johnson. Hospitals did get some emergency relief funding under the CARES Act and other stimulus bills. That will help offset some of the extra COVID-care debt, but only time will tell how the crisis will impact future costs. 1335

Tucked away in the small town of Eaton, Colorado, there’s a time machine capsule dedicated to one type of technology, and one man who has dedicated 35 years of his life to this collection. “My museum is called Lee Maxwell’s Old and Unusual Collection,” said 89-year-old Lee Maxwell. “I took up this hobby about 35 years ago, and it’s turned into an obsession. My collection is unusual that’s for sure.”Maxwell collects washing machines. He is the owner of the only washing machine museum in the country. “Why? Well a lot of people ask me why,” Maxwell said. “Since I’m not a golfer or fisherman, and I don’t like to bungee jump, I couldn’t afford corvettes, so I chose washing machines.”Maxwell said he owns a washing machine from every state, some dating back to the 1800s. “Over 1,500 machines,” Maxwell said. “The number is kind of a secret though, because I told my wife, Barbara, I would stop at a thousand. Keep that under your breath. 1,500 machines, 1,500 stories.” For 35 years, Maxwell traveled the country collecting washing machines to bring back to his home of 17 acres. “I spent a lot of time here the last 35 years,” Maxwell said, while standing in his warehouse full of washing machines. “I have to find a good home for it. There are some folks around the US that are interested in it. I want to find a home close to northern Colorado. I’m eighty-nine years old now, I would like to go eleven more years to really see it blossom.” Maxwell said he has a few organizations interested, but he did not want to give any more details. He hopes it will continue to grow as the largest washing machine museum in the country. “There are three attributes you have to have to be a washing machine collector,” Maxwell said. “You have to have space, you have to be insane, and you have to have a saint for a wife. And I got all three.” 1851

The State Bar of California filed to place attorney Michael Avenatti on involuntary inactive status on Monday. The move is the first step toward disbarment, said Teresa Ruano, program supervisor for the Office of Strategic Communications for the State Bar of California. The filing comes after Avenatti was indicted on 36 counts by a federal jury in California in April. The charges include embezzlement, wire fraud, tax evasion, bankruptcy fraud and bank fraud connected to his alleged theft of tens of millions of dollars from five clients, one a paraplegic. In a separate case in New York, Avenatti is accused of attempting to extort more than million from sportswear company Nike. He was also charged with fraud and aggravated identity theft involving his former client, Stormy Daniels. Prosecutors accused him of stealing about 0,000 of a book advance intended for Daniels.Ruano says there are still several steps before Avenatti would be disbarred but a change to "inactive involuntary status" would prevent him from practicing law in the state of California.Avenatti has 10 days to file a response and request a hearing. If no response if filed, he will have waived his right to a hearing. The State Bar must file a status decision within 30 days of the hearing.Avenatti responded to the State Bar's action in a tweet on Monday."The action by the CA State Bar is nothing more than a 'pile-on' and was entirely expected in light of the pending charges. I offered to cooperate with the Bar and instead they decided to issue a press release as a stunt. I look forward to being fully exonerated by the facts." 1629

The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned leading e-cigarette maker Juul Labs about illegally marketing its product as a safer alternative to cigarettes. The FDA ordered Juul to respond within 15 days with corrective actions and its plan to comply with federal law. It noted that failure to comply could result in fines, seizures or injunction."Regardless of where products like e-cigarettes fall on the continuum of tobacco product risk, the law is clear that, before marketing tobacco products for reduced risk, companies must demonstrate with scientific evidence that their specific product does in fact pose less risk or is less harmful. JUUL has ignored the law, and very concerningly, has made some of these statements in school to our nation's youth," Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless said in a statement. The FDA sent a separate letter to Juul "expressing concern, and requesting more information, about several issues raised in a recent Congressional hearing regarding JUUL's outreach and marking practices, including those targeted at students, tribes, health insurers and employers."The agency requested documents related to marketing, including scientific evidence and data such as consumer perception studies "related to whether these statements and representations explicitly or implicitly convey that JUUL products pose less risk, are less harmful, present reduced exposure, are safer than other tobacco products or that the products are smoking cessation products. In November, the FDA revealed that vaping had increased nearly 80% among high schoolers and 50% among middle schoolers since a year earlier. Public health experts have said that Juul has largely propelled the rise, commanding about 75% of the e-cigarette market in the United States."We believe you have a continuing responsibility to take action to address the epidemic of youth use of your products, some of which appears to have been a direct result of your product design and marketing campaigns, whether or not some of these practices have been discontinued," the FDA's letter to Juul said.Juul has maintained that its products are intended to convert adult smokers to what it described in the past as a less-harmful alternative. In other communications, the company says it cannot make claims its products are safer, in line with FDA regulations."We are reviewing the letters and will fully cooperate," according to a Juul Labs spokesperson.Calls for action against JuulLast week, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, asked the FDA in a letter to take "appropriate enforcement action" against Juul. He said the agency should "protect the American public from the fraudulent and unapproved medical claims" made by the company.Krishnamoorthi's letter followed a two-day hearing in July, after which the committee concluded that "JUUL appears to be violating FDA regulations against making unapproved express and implied claims that its product helps users stop smoking cigarettes and is safer than cigarettes."At the subcommittee hearing in July, several people testified that the company was directly marketing to children in high school, to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and to smoking cessation groups. On Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the agency is now aware of at least 450 possible cases of severe lung disease that could be caused by vaping across 33 states. There have been at least five deaths across five states -- one each in Illinois, Oregon, Minnesota, Indiana and California -- linked to the illnesses. After news of additional deaths spread on Friday, US Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin called on FDA's Sharpless to act on regulating e-cigarettes and flavors in the next 10 days. Durbin said he would call for Sharpless' resignation if he did not take action."As Acting Commissioner of the FDA, you alone have the power to stop this vaping epidemic, which has now reached the point where children and young adults are getting sick and dying," Durbin said in a statement. "If you continue to refuse to do your job -- which is to protect the public health -- then it is time to allow someone else to take the helm." 4254

This time of year is filled with shopping and holiday cheer. But along with the sweets and the sweaters, comes a third "S" — stress.“I definitely get stressed when I’m shopping, just to make sure everyone will like the gift I give them,” one woman said while shopping at a local market in Denver."I think family stresses families out,” Christina Critchell said.Holiday stress is a real problem for a lot of people.“I decided just this week that part of it is trying to juggle everybody’s different expectations,” Sarah Twiss said.A survey from Healthline found around 62% of people experience some level of stress during the holidays. Only 10% said they’re not stressed at all.“Everybody’s looking for a perfect Christmas,” said Dr. Ira Dauber, a physician at South Denver Cardiology. “It’s very stressful, nobody wants to ruin anybody else’s good time.”That stress can take a toll. “There’s a peak of heart attacks Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day,” Dauber said. He helps patients with a variety of heart issues.“There’s more than one medical study that says there is such a thing as a 'holiday heart attack,' ” Dauber said.’’ In one study by the American Heart Association, researchers found a 4.2% increase in heart-related deaths between December 25 and January 7."Another study by the British Medical Journal found the highest risk for heart attack is on Christmas Eve.“What causes the spike in holiday heart attacks is really a hard thing to know,” Dauber said. “A lot of the theory is it's a stressful time of year.”The theories on why this happens changes depending on the doctor you talk to.“The short answer is yes, stress can be a factor in heart attacks,” said Dr. David Avner, an emergency medicine physician at UCHealth Broomfield Hospital. He said a lot of other factors also contribute to this spike, like traveling more around the holidays, forgetting medications — like blood pressure pills — at home, or simply not speaking up when you don’t feel well.“You might not want to interrupt the festivities and say, you know, I’m having some chest discomfort,” Avner said. “You don’t want to be shy about letting family and friends know.”There are ways to lower your risk, too. He said monitoring your diet, avoiding fatty foods and making sure you’re taking your medications regularly will help.“You need to be aware of what your body normally can do and any changes to that,” he said. “Heart attacks announce themselves very differently in different people.”There are also ways to keep your stress at bay.“It’s going to be different for different people, so if you go to a spa and that helps you feel relaxed, that’s gonna help," Avner said. "If things are feeling stressed at home and you go for a walk, or you like to go to the gym and that’s your outlet for stress release, those would probably be equally as effective." 2860
