BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, urged the municipality of Beijing to intensify efforts to promote the development of service and manufacturing industries.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during his inspection tour in Beijing from Wednesday to Friday.During the tour, Jia visited factories, construction sites and communities to exchange views with officials and civilians. He also listened to a report from the Beijing municipal government.Beijing has taken the lead in optimizing its industrial structure as the output of its service industry accounts for 75 percent of the revenue from all sectors, according to official sources of the city.Jia encouraged Beijing to continue to promote its service sector by focusing on producer services and expanding the city's service businesses overseas.While visiting Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd., Jia called for the strengthening of technological innovation in order to boost high-end equipment manufacturing.Beijing should turn itself into a center for national technological innovation to contribute to the country's economic development, Jia said.He also stressed the better protection of forest resources and the more efficient use of water to develop modern agriculture.

SUVA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Some 300 diabetes patients undergo amputations every year in Fiji and the trend is worrying the authorities.This is according to research carried out by the country's Physiotherapy Associations which shows that majority of these amputations occur in the 40 to 60 age group, physiotherapist Lusia Tikolevu told radio FijiVillage website on Monday.Tikolevu said that they are trying to formulate a protocol for physicist to better understand diabetes in Fiji.A visit to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Fiji's capital city of Suva by Xinhua reporter reveals the increasing number of bed ridden patients affected by diabetes in wards.Tikolevu said that diabetes is a prevalent disease and needs the involvement of the whole community for a successful preventative measures.Shocking figures show four out of every 10 people in Fiji have diabetes, putting it amongst the highest in the world.The Fred Hollows Foundation in New Zealand that completed the first survey of its kind in Fiji also showed the diabetic rate in the island nation is four times more than in New Zealand.The survey across 34 communities in Fiji found 40 percent of the people have diabetes."When we found out that 40 percent of the population had diabetes the scope and the depth of the problem just hit us. The impact in terms of costs family aspects, economic issues its just going to be staggering," says Doctor Tom Schaefer from the New Zealand foundation.The survey results also showed a third of those with diabetes did not know they had the disease and women were almost twice as likely as men to have it.The magnitude of the problem is worrying for a health system which has committed staff but little resources."The cost of medication alone is going to outstrip the ability of any health system to do it," says Schaefer.The existence of the sugar cane industry in the island nation may be a contributing factor to the high level of diabetics.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, ending its nearly 27-year flying career as the world's most- traveled spaceship.According to NASA, Discovery touched down at 11:57 a.m. EST ( 1657 GMT) after a 13-day resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."For the final time: wheels stop," Discovery's commander Steven Lindsey called out as the shuttle rolled to a full stop.Discovery lifted off on Feb. 24 from the Kennedy Center and arrived at the space station on Feb. 26.During the mission, the astronauts installed a spare closet module on the space station, completed some important repairs and delivered the first humanoid robot, though it will need more time to be assembled and made operational.The 330-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. Once it is unpacked -- likely several months after its arrival at the station -- it will initially be operated inside the Destiny laboratory for operational testing, but over time both its territory and its applications could expand.Aboard the station, its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space. However, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.

CAPE TOWN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum on Africa, scheduled on May 2-4 in Cape Town, South Africa, will see participants exchange views on how the continent can turn to the next chapter of development.The meeting, expected to gather a record 900 participants from over 60 countries, will be held under the theme "From Vision to Action, Africa's Next Chapter," organizers said."We chose this theme because we feel it is very relevant for the events that are taking place on this continent, and the opportunity for growth and investment that the international and African communities are seeing," said Katherine Tweedie, head of Africa for the World Economic Forum.Seven of the fastest growing economies in the world in the next five years will be in sub-Saharan Africa, Tweedie noted, saying that a lot of discussion will be devoted to explore drivers behind this growth.Africa's economic growth in recent years have impressed the world. Though being the most underdeveloped continent, Africa have been more resilient than expected during the global economic crisis.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) have predicted that the continent's growth in 2011 will reach 5.3 percent.Under one of the three thematic pillars, "Shaping Africa's Role in the New Reality," the meeting will explore how Africa can take on a leadership role in the new reality and guard against newly emerging global and regional risks. As a result a good part of the discussions will be focusing on issues taking place in this part of Africa, she added.Although South Africa has hosted the World Economic Forum on Africa for a number of times, this year the host is attracting particular attention.South Africa has joined the BRICS group of countries which also include Brazil, Russia, India and China, becoming the only African member in the grouping. It is also the only country from Africa in G20. In November this year, South African city of Durban will host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.How can the country speak for Africa in the international arena, and what role can it play in facilitating closer cooperation between developing countries is also expected to draw in-depth discussions at the meeting.Meanwhile, participants are also expected to exchange views on issues including Africa's agriculture development, infrastructure construction, China-Africa cooperation, impact of political situation in North African and the Middle East on Africa's economic development, among others.
