DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates has announced a major liberalization of the country’s Islamic personal laws, allowing unmarried couples to cohabitate, loosening alcohol restrictions and criminalizing so-called “honor killings.” The broadening of personal freedoms reflects the changing profile of a country that has sought to bill itself as a skyscraper-studded destination for Western tourists, fortune-seekers and businesses despite its legal system based on a hard-line interpretation of Islamic law. Saturday's announcement also follows a historic U.S.-brokered deal to normalize relations between the UAE and Israel, which is expected to bring an influx of Israeli tourists and investment. The moves come as the UAE gets ready to host the high-stakes World Expo. 803

Do you always double check the pockets of clothes and other items you donate? You should, because you might be donating your identity to thieves.“We see credit cards; we see passports, birth certificates, social security cards, tax information,” says Travis Carlson with Goodwill of Denver.Sensitive documents, often with personal information, are accidentally left in donations delivered to places like Goodwill.“We see things tucked inside bed sheets, inside books, little boxes,” says Carlson. “Often times, we think people think they just forgot about it; they didn't know it was inside that item. Or perhaps they’re donating something on behalf of a family member who passed away. We see that a lot, unfortunately.”Different Goodwill stores have different policies, but the Goodwill of Denver in Colorado has a loss prevention box at their locations.“We have all kinds of credit cards, driver’s licenses, certificates, checks, things like that,” says Carlson. But experts say you shouldn't rely on the donation site to safely dispose of personal information. In fact, you could be putting yourself at serious risk.Colorado's Attorney General Cynthia Coffman runs a consumer fraud unit. She says all someone needs, is a small piece of information. Once they have that, they can usually find more and use that information to impersonate you to get, for example, a loan or even obtain costly medical services.“Folks just need to be very wary,” Coffman says. “And I don't like to scare people, but I do want them to be very self-conscious about keeping that personal information confidential."Bottom line, the team at Goodwill says to always go through your donations before dropping the goods off. 1706

During a hearing with the House Oversight Committee, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy admitted he was not aware of the different prices of sending mail through the postal service.Representative Katie Porter asked DeJoy if he knew the price of a first-class stamp. Dejoy confidently answered 55 cents.Rep. Porter followed up by asking DeJoy if he knew the price to send a postcard. DeJoy paused, stumped by the question. “I don’t,” he responded. It’s 35 cents. She then asked how much it cost to send “one of those square cards.”“I’ll submit that I know very little about a postage stamp,” DeJoy said. The Congresswoman then asked about how many people voted by mail in the 2016 election. DeJoy said he did not know, and did not want to guess.Rep. Porter told DeJoy she was “concerned about your understanding of this agency,” because “you started taking very decisive action when you became postmaster general.”DeJoy has been the postmaster general for about 70 days.Rep. Porter’s quiz came toward the end of a multiple-hour House hearing in which DeJoy answered questions about his qualifications to be postmaster general, the removal of blue mail boxes, a policy about truck schedules, and observations about slow mail delivery this summer. This is not the first time Rep. Porter has stumped a witness during a hearing with a math problem. She got a lot of attention earlier this year when she asked representatives of the coronavirus task force the price of a full battery of coronavirus testing. She then got out a white board and wrote out the costs. After doing so, Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, agreed to cover the cost of testing. 1657

Dr. Anthony Fauci has a warning for young adults who think they will bounce back from COVID-19.Speaking at an event with the American Society for Microbiology, Dr. Fauci pointed out that many young adults and kids who believe they had a “mild” case of the coronavirus take a significant amount of time to recover from all symptoms.“We’d better be careful when we say ‘Young people who don’t wind up in the hospital are fine, let them get infected, it’s OK.’ No, it’s not OK,” Dr. Fauci said during the briefing. He went on to say that those who don’t require hospitalization and are otherwise healthy can end up in bed for two or three weeks with COVID-19, and have residual symptoms for weeks or sometimes months longer. The country’s top infectious disease doctor said check-ups down the road with patients who supposedly recovered have shown many “have a substantially high proportion of cardiovascular abnormalities, evidence of myocarditis by MRI and PET scans, evidence of emerging cardiomyopathies.”He called these findings “really troublesome” because they are constantly evolving as the world learns more about COVID-19 and the long-term impacts on the human body. 1179
