Given the COVID-19 pandemic, an economic downturn, and months of civil unrest, it may be tough to find someone who wants to be forever associated with the year 2020.But Time Magazine has to pick someone to be its "Person of the Year."On Thursday, Time announced President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris its pick for its famed "Person of the Year" profile. On Thursday morning, the magazine announced that there were four people on its "shortlist": President-elect Joe Biden, President Donald Trump, Dr. Anthony Fauci and "frontline health care workers" and the "movement for racial justice."Time also named its picks for "Athlete of the Year" and "Entertainer of the Year" on Thursday.Time selected LeBron James as 2020's Athlete of the Year. James won his fourth NBA championship in 2020 — his first with the Los Angeles Lakers — to conclude the league's pandemic-shortened season, which finished in a "bubble" format. James also continued to publicly speak out against racial injustice and became a political touchstone throughout the year, regularly sharing his political views on social media. He also organized the voter registration of thousands of urban voters ahead of the 2020 election.Korean pop ban BTS was named by Time as the 2020 Entertainers of the Year. The seven-member band has broken streaming records around the world and helped K-pop go mainstream in the U.S. and around the world.Time has selected a "Person of the Year" each year since 1927. According to the magazine, the "Person of the Year" is "usually an individual but sometimes multiple people who greatly impacted the country and world during the calendar year."Biden would appear to have a leg up over other semifinalists. In election years dating back to 1992, the winner of the presidential election has been selected as Time's "Person of the Year." Every president dating back to President Franklin Roosevelt has been named "Person of the Year" at some point in their administration.Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg was named Time's "Person of the Year" in 2019 — a decision that irked Trump to the point that he criticized Thunberg on Twitter. Other recent winners include "The Guardians" — journalists who faced persecution for their reporting (2018), "The Silence Breakers" — women who came forward to report sexual assault allegations against powerful men (2017), and Trump (2016). 2408

HAVRE, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are reviewing an encounter between a Border Patrol agent and two women who were speaking Spanish at a gas station in northern Montana, the agency said Monday. The women, who are U.S. citizens, said the agent detained them for about 35 minutes Wednesday in Havre, a small city about 30 miles from the U.S.-Canada border. One of the women, Ana Suda, asked the agent why he asked for their identifications."I recorded him admitting that he just stop(ped) us because we (were) speaking Spanish, no other reason," Suda wrote in a Facebook post published early Wednesday. "Remember do NOT speak Spanish sounds like is illegal."Neither Suda nor her friend, Mimi Hernandez, answered their cellphones or responded to text messages on Monday. In Suda's video of the encounter, posted by KRTV of Great Falls, the agent says speaking Spanish "is very unheard of up here."Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jason Givens declined to answer questions about the incident. He released a statement that said the incident is being reviewed to ensure that all appropriate policies were followed."Although most Border Patrol work is conducted in the immediate border area, agents have broad law enforcement authorities and are not limited to a specific geography within the United States," the statement said. "They have the authority to question individuals, make arrests, and take and consider evidence."Border Patrol agents are authorized by law to make warrantless stops within a "reasonable distance" from the border — defined as 100 miles (160 kilometers) under federal regulations. That broad authority has led to complaints of racial profiling by agents who board buses and trains and stop people at highway checkpoints.Havre, which has just under 10,000 residents and is near two Native American reservations, has a mostly white population, with just 4 percent Hispanic, according to the U.S. Census. It is typically a quiet posting for the Border Patrol. Last year, the 183 agents in the Havre sector made 39 arrests — just .01 percent of the 310,531 arrests made nationwide made by Border Patrol agents. Eleven of those 39 people arrested were Mexican.Last week's confrontation happened within a day of the posting of another video showing a New York attorney ranting against Spanish speaking restaurant workers and threatening to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement to have them "kicked out of my country."Allegations have been made before of law-enforcement officers in Montana racially profiling people to find out their immigration status. In 2015, the Montana Highway Patrol established a policy forbidding the detention of a person based to verify his status, settling a lawsuit alleging that troopers routinely pulled over people for minor infractions to do just that. 2856

Health officials in Maryland have reported two more cases of severe bleeding problems in people who used synthetic marijuana. That brings the state's total to three patients so far. It's known as K2 or spice and can be sold as liquids for use in E-cigarettes.It has caused bleeding in more than 100 others in at least four other states. And likely contaminated with rat poison which has recently killed three people in Illinois."Now, these substances are not actually marijuana at all they are synthetic drugs that are made in a lab somewhere their chemicals then are sprayed on to dry plants so it's basically playing Russian roulette you have no idea what it is that you are taking but you know that it can possibly kill you, " says Dr. Wen,Dr. Wen also says synthetic marijuana is illegal in Baltimore City and to call 311 if you see any stores selling it.    878

Have you ever looked at a person in an ad and wondered, what do they look like in real life? Now, with at least one company's ads, you won't have to wonder.CVS has unveiled a beauty campaign using un-retouched images, aimed at creating a more realistic standard of beauty. But do they really look that different? It's called the Beauty in Real Life campaign. CVS says the goal of this campaign is to create a new and more realistic standard of beauty. The way you can tell if an ad is a part of the campaign is it has a CVS Beauty Mark, a white stamp watermark that reads beauty unaltered. If you see the stamp on an ad it means that the images in the ad haven't been "materially altered." That means the brand did not "digitally alter or change a person's shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color or enhance or alter lines, wrinkles or other individual characteristics."So essentially if you saw the person in the ad walking down the street, they would look like they do in the ad. That's the goal, because in general, the editing of photos in ads really has has an impact on how women and girls feel about themselves.A survey found two out of three women strongly agree that the media has set an unrealistic standard of beauty. 80% of women feel worse about themselves after seeing a beauty ad. 90% of girls ages 15 to 17 want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance. We asked a few people what they think about this new initiative."I think that's awesome," one woman said.  "I think we've been given unrealistic beauty standards for a really long time. So it's really nice to see companies putting in women who actually look like me. I don't have to have these unrealistic standards of what I should look like. I think it's a really awesome thing."Other women felt differently."Non touching is a good start," one woman said. "But if I saw that I would be like, real life? I don't know if I'd look like that in real life."Her friend agreed."When I wake up I do not look like that in real life," the woman said. "So I think like the touch up is a good start, but for that like slogan for the campaign I feel it's sending the wrong message in a way."This campaign is rolling out now digitally and the goal is for all the images in the beauty sections of CVS stores to reflect transparency by the end of 2020. 2339
