SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego announced Wednesday they've selected a developer for a new pod hotel concept near San Diego Bay.STAY OPEN was chosen to develop and operate the new low-cost, pod-style hotel concept that would be located on Pacific Highway between the Port's administration building and Palm Street.The concept envisions 33 rooms with eight to 12 pods per room. Each pod would include a single-occupancy bed, storage locker, power supply, ventilation control, privacy screen, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms would share one bathroom with shower facilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There is new frustration for San Diegans trying to cutback their spending amid coronavirus restrictions.Some companies are refusing to freeze automatic renewals despite being closed. That's leading to resentment as workers across the county face layoffs, furloughs and reduced hours. Amanda Sullivan, a mental health professional, says she's still being billed a month for her 24 Hour Fitness membership, despite the gym shuttered. 24 Hour Fitness promises instead to add the lost time to the end of her membership. "It feels like robbery," she said. "We're taking your money, you can't do anything about it, we're telling you this is what we're offering, we'll just tack on time at the end."Sullivan said her emails to 24 Hour Fitness have gone largely ignored, or she's received boilerplate responses. Meanwhile, 24 Hour Fitness has shuttered its call center. In a statement, the gym stood by its decision, noting it also made available its subscription app that includes exercise instruction."24 Hour Fitness is focused on the continued health and safety of our club members, team members and guests. Weiner suggested reaching out to corporate, and posting on social media if things don't change. "If they were still rebuffed, there are multiple avenues to take, from hiring counsel to speak to the company on their behalf, to filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the local San Diego Chamber of Commerce," Weiner said.
