SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When COVID-19 forced everyone in, it also forced Canyon Crest Academy students Erika and Vivian to get creative"When quarantine and school closures became a reality for us, I really wanted to give back to society and especially how it's been draining resources for hospitals that are on the front lines, I wanted to use my skillset to provide in any way I can," said Erika. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian. So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tuesday, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced two initiatives designed to improve the way law enforcement interacts with people with mental health issues. Up to .5 million will fund the Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Training for police officers and a 911 Mental Health Checklist card. According to Stephan, law enforcement across San Diego County responded to more than 53,000 calls for service that involved a mental health issue last year. A 25-year study of officer-involved shootings in San Diego County shows 79 percent of the incidents included people who had drug and/or mental health issues. And, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, about 30 percent of inmates in San Diego’s jails receive medication for a mental health disorder.Over the past year, 200 stakeholders and experts came up with 30 specific recommendations for how law enforcement and the justice system can better respond to people facing mental health challenges. Crisis and De-escalation Training and development of the 911 Checklist Card are two of the recommendations included in the report. The DA-funded Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Training will consist of a newly-created curriculum that builds upon, and enhances the current training peace officers receive. The training will include classroom discussions led by PERT (Psychiatric Emergency Response Team) experts, role playing "real life" situations, and use of a video simulator known as the MILO Range Theater. Officers will also be trained to recognize the signs of methamphetamine toxicity, a condition often encountered by police. The MILO system is being purchased by the DA’s office using federal asset forfeiture funding. The interactive simulator improves on similar training systems currently available in San Diego County. The training is also portable, so it can travel countywide in order to promote maximum participation by law enforcement while allowing departments to perform their ongoing duties. The DA says the goal of the two initiatives include reducing the need to use deadly force, improve officer safety and reduce the likelihood that the person in the crisis will get injured. 2215

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While San Diego County teeters on the edge of a fall from the state's red to purple tier, local school districts are left scrambling to sort out conflicting directions."It's extremely frustrating. I want to bring kids back on campus more than anyone," said La Mesa-Spring Valley School District Superintendent David Feliciano during an interview with ABC10 News on Friday. His district pushed its reopening date to Nov. 30 but may be forced to stay closed if the San Diego County moves to the purple tier which is the most restrictive tier.If by next Tuesday San Diego County's case rate continues to hit above 7 cases per 100,000 residents, we could be moved into California's purple tier.RELATED: In-Depth: When will San Diego playgrounds reopen?"It puts us in a difficult spot and it especially puts parents in a very difficult spot and we're the ones breaking that news [to them]," added Feliciano. On Friday, officials with the California Department of Public Health wrote to ABC10News, "If a school did not open while the county was in the red tier, and the county subsequently moves to the purple tier, that school will not be able to open for in-person instruction, until the county has returned to the red tier and been in the red tier for two weeks."That goes against what San Diego County officials have been reporting. Its online guidance plan reads in part, "If we are directed by the State to Tier 1, our schools will not be [affected] in their ability to continue in-person education or initiate their in-person education while in Tier 1. If our county were to go to Tier 1, a waiver would not be required to reopen for in-person learning and grade levels would not be restricted."RELATED: Some San Diego businesses plan to defy future orders to close"This is new for everyone and it's confusing and difficult for everyone," added Feliciano. An official with the Poway Unified School District wrote to ABC10 News on Friday that it could not offer an interview because it was still trying to clarify the contradictions between the state and San Diego County. On Friday afternoon, a spokesperson with San Diego County sent 10News the following statement: 2191
