WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House South Lawn and its iconic Rose Garden are undergoing extensive re-sodding and other work after last month’s Republican National Convention turned them into a muddy mess. Crews have been working to repair damage to the public grounds, including browning of the South Lawn and mud patches in the Rose Garden, after the spaces were used as backdrops for President Donald Trump’s convention events. We don’t often think of racism impacting people’s health. But Dr. Amber Johnson has made a career of studying how the two issues are intertwined.“We’re in Los Angeles at this moment. Black women are the most rent-burdened in this area, so you think about having the stresses of being in a low-class environment and having to deal with racism and cope with racism," said Dr. Johnson, a professor at California State Long Beach who focuses on racism in health care. "And a lot of times, there’s feelings of isolation and loneliness all those things contribute to early physiological wear and tear on our body. Our bodies are literally wearing down."Dr. Johnson says racism is ingrained in our health system. One reason she says implicit bias, which are attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding and our decisions, even if we don’t realize it.“These implicit biases are passed down through practice, beliefs, experimentation, all these other things that really contribute to these implicit biases that we see, that are, that become very apparent when black people present in health care fields,” she explained.But systemic racism may start before you get to the doctor's office. Some experts say it begins with access.“People of color face long-standing and persistent disparities in health and healthcare, and these span across a wide array of measures,” said Samantha Artiga, the Director of the Disparities Policy Project at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Artiga's job is to look at how people of different races, genders, and classes are treated differently within the health care system. She says disparities in health care and health outcomes start with access to care and works their way up through every imaginable facet of life.“People of color are more likely to be uninsured than white individuals. That translates into increased barriers to access and care because they’re more concerned about costs, may have less access to a provider, not have a huge source of care outside of the emergency room,” she explained.Those healthcare woes can then be tied directly to jobs because 159 million Americans of all races get health insurance through their employers.But experts say the root of the race and health care problem lies in the kinds of jobs filled mostly by Black and Brown Americans. This is because they are more likely to be working in industries that may not offer coverage to their employees, or when it is offered it may not be affordable to individualsResearch from the National Institute of Health and the Center for American Progress shows African Americans in the US are less likely to have health care coverage than white people. That may be why Black women are more likely to be overweight. Black children are more likely to have asthma. Black adults are more likely to have hypertension. Cancer kills Black people at a higher rate than any other group. Black people are more likely to be diabetic than white people. Black babies die at more than double the rates of all other races in the US, and Black women die more than three times as often during childbirth as white women.Those are just some of the disparities that exist.Over and over again while researching this story, we heard about another major healthcare issue for many people of color: a shortage of doctors, nurses, and other health care workers that look like them, sound like them and have similar life experiences.“Black physicians make up 4-5 percent of all doctors practicing nationwide, whereas, Blacks make up 13 percent of the US population,” said Dr. Leon McDougle, the president of the National Medical Association, a national group that represents Black physicians in the US. He says when he was in medical school, he didn’t have a lot of Black classmates.“I went to medical school here at the Ohio State in the mid-’80s and there weren’t many faculty doctors that looked like me, and when you saw a Black doctor, it almost became a mental image. So, that was inspiration for me to say this has to change,” said Dr. McDougle.He says in 2020 when he sees patients of color, it has an impact on them and they have an impact on him and his students.“More than half the time when I see patients, I have a medical student, and not too uncommonly, that student will be African-American or LatinX. And to just hear the patients give them, cause most of my patients are African American, and to hear them help uplift them in their pursuit of becoming a physician, I hear that all the time,” he said.So, there is hope that there will be more healthcare workers of color, but there is still a long way to go. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, over the last five years, the number of Black medical students has gone up about one percent, from 6 percent to 7 percent.Many say that's not enough.And the people working for change say the opportunity to make it happen is now.“It’s hard work to move systems and move structures and I just hope we don’t miss the opportunity that is presented at this current time, in terms of the attention, focus, and movement to do something about it,”“It’s not just for me to say I did this, but it’s for me, it’s for my mom, for my grandmother, it’s for my daughter. That’s four generations of black women that I’ve seen negatively affected by racism,” said Artiga.“It’s killing Black people. It’s killing, it’s killing us,” said Dr. Johnson. 5410

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a picturesque suburb outside of Milwaukee home to 48,000 Americans.It’s normally a quiet town filled with restaurants, shops and family homes, but the last few months have been anything but quiet.“We've had over 60 nights of protests and riots,” said Dennis McBride, the mayor of Wauwatosa. “Protests mostly have been nonviolent, but mostly have not been peaceful.”There were multiple nights the city was under a curfew, the National Guard was deployed and businesses were boarded up.Families marched through the streets like never before. The demonstrations began in this community when George Floyd was killed and intensified after a Wauwatosa officer shot and killed a teenager and was not charged.“It's because of the racism we've had in our country for 400 years. We are not immune from that in a suburb,” he said.“We’ve seen that in towns, villages and communities across Wisconsin: folks really leaning into engaging and organizing to see the change they want in their own communities,” said Tomás Clasen, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union.Clasen said the rising number of protests in suburban communities gives people who normally wouldn’t participate in a front-row seat to change.“People are starting to realize that the problem is larger and impacts their communities in ways they didn’t necessarily acknowledge,” said the attorney.Restaurant owner Chris Leffler said businesses in town were right in the middle, wanting to support the message of the demonstrators but also wanting to protect their livelihoods.“We do need some police reform, but you know we have to trust our police. You know, there's a balance,” said Leffler.Even weeks after protests ended, the town is still boarded up. “Looking at what's happened around our country, unfortunately, I think that there was some anxiety and we had the same anxieties and thought, ‘Better protect ourselves,’” said Leffler.But he said the worry comes with hope. From outrage, policies and attitudes will change.“Black, white, Republican, Democrat, we're all part of this one community, and really, unity is what we're hoping for here as a community,” he said.There have been thousands of protests across the country this year for racial equality and social justice, and now more than ever, these movements are moving outside major cities into smaller communities like Wauwatosa.Experts say one reason more people are engaging in demonstrations in suburban areas: they can connect easily first on social media.“Having access to social media is really useful for building groups,” said Patti Silverman, founder of PERsist, a progressive women’s advocacy group in Washington County, a suburb outside of Milwaukee. “We started probably four months ago with three members. As of today, we have 400.”Silverman and women across her county are gathering to protest and rally for change, something many of these women have never done before.“People don't like to hear that we're here, but just by existing we have power and we have the ability to make change,” she said.These women are organizing in their suburban community, hoping for fairer government and equality for all. They’re making sure they’re speaking out peacefully but forcefully.“I think people are realizing these issues aren’t just aren’t just things that are happening in big cities, and it’s really easy to be comfortable in this county that’s so white and just think, ‘Well, this doesn’t impact me.’ But this is a time, and we’re seeing in the last four years, the consequences of not speaking out, and this is a time to not sit back and be comfortable and to really use your voice,” said Silverman.Keeping the community involved is something these women and their neighbors want to see continue not just this year but for years to come.“We can't be complacent,” said Silverman. PERsist, along with the local businesses, community leaders and neighbors believe starting on the smallest level, in the quietest communities is the best way to fight the silence stopping change. 4047

  

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for several of his most senior economic advisers at a press event on Tuesday afternoon.The group includes liberal economists and policy specialists who established their credentials during the previous two Democratic administrations. Biden is placing a premium on diversity in his selection of Cabinet nominees and key advisers.For treasury secretary, Biden has nominated former Fed chair Janet Yellen. She would be the first woman to lead the Treasury Department in its 231 years of existence. She would also be the first person to serve as treasury secretary, chair of the Federal Reserve, and chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.In introducing Yellen, Biden called her the most qualified person for the job,citing her work at the Fed following the economic recession of the late '00s.In referencing the hit Broadway play "Hamilton," which centers around the life of the first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, Biden joked that Lin Manual-Miranda would eventually need to write a musical based on Yellen's life.Biden has also tapped Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget. Tanden would be the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to lead the agency that oversees the federal budget. She currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to advancing policies that increase opportunity for Americans.Additionally, Biden has chosen Wally Adeyemo as his deputy treasury secretary. He previously served the in the Obama-Biden administration as deputy director of the National Economic Council and deputy national security advisor. He currently serves as president of the Obama Foundation.Adeyemo would be the first African-American to serve in the role.Biden has picked Ceclica Rouse as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. She’s a former member of the Obama-Biden council and currently serves as Dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. If confirmed, she will become just the first African American and just the fourth woman to lead the CEA in the 74 years of its existence.Jared Bernstein has been chosen as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. He previously served as Biden’s chief economist in the first years of the Obama-Biden administration.And Heather Boushey will also become a member of the Council of Economic Advisers.
