National leaders are launching an investigation into nursing homes and how they are handling the coronavirus crisis, specifically asking how they spent federal funds during the pandemic and their efforts to prevent further infections.Letters seeking information were sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency that oversees nursing homes, as well as the five largest for-profit nursing home companies in the country. Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have created a fund to raise money for furloughed members due to the COVID-19 shutdown.The Nashville Symphony Players’ Assembly set up the fund on their website. They're raising the money for 83 members of the orchestra who are still on a furlough that could last a full year. Click here to donate to the Nashville Symphony members. "It's really terrifying. You have a lot of single parents in the orchestra," said Melinda Whitley, a long time viola player for the symphony.Whitley said she knows of at least two musicians who have had to sell their home because of the furlough, which started on July 1."No one prepares, not on a musician's salary, to spend a year with no income," she said.To encourage people to donate, and to continue to play their music, the Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have continued to play live music online. This past weekend an online concert was held at St. George Episcopal Church in Nashville.A number of concerts have also been planned to help raise money for the musicians."This is Nashville. And it's a very creative place and a supportive place. If we can continue to serve the community the best way we know how then they will continue to help us. That's the best we can do for ourselves at this point," said Whitley.Whitley said she's worried more musicians will leave the orchestra if something doesn't change soon. MLB and the league’s player union held negotiations this week, days after a contentious series of statements between the league and union indicated the 2020 season is in peril.The league and players are working on a plan to begin the 2020 season after it was postponed by the spread of the coronavirus. With most professional sports leagues coming back this summer, MLB has yet to formalize a plan for resumption.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that a new set of proposals have been forwarded to the players.The tone from Manfred on Wednesday differed from earlier in the week.“We left that meeting with a jointly developed framework that we agreed could form the basis of an agreement and subject to conversations with our respective constituents,” Manfred said. “I summarized that framework numerous times in the meeting and sent Tony a written summary today. Consistent with our conversations yesterday, I am encouraging the Clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same.”Earlier on Wednesday, reports surfaced that the league and players have finalized a deal, but those reports appeared to be premature as the MLBPA said that no agreement has been made.At odds is the number of games to be played, and whether players will be paid a full prorated amount for those games. MLB said that based on an agreement between the leagues and players days after the league suspended Spring Training, players would only be paid a full prorated salary if games were held in front of fans. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) – A car crashed into a power pole in National City late Monday evening, killing a teen driver and leaving his female passenger trapped in the wreckage.The crash was reported at around 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of E 16th Street, according to National City police.Police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his Cadillac sedan and veered into a pole.The driver died at the scene, and it took responding emergency crews over an hour to pull the unconscious passenger from the wreckage. She was transported to the hospital with severe head trauma and other life-threatening injuries.The driver and passenger are believed to be in their late teens.Several people who said they were family members of the victims arrived at the scene to talk to police.No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. 895

(KGTV) — Marine Corps Air Station Miramar held an annual mass casualty drill Tuesday ahead of this year's Miramar Air Show.The scenario, centered around an F-35 crashing off the end of the runway into the crowd, included about 20 people playing the part of the injured, complete with fake blood and shrapnel wounds."Getting everybody together is very crucial because one fire department, or one hospital, or one ambulance company cannot handle a large scale incident with a lot of patients," MCAS Miramar Fire Captain Paul Jacobs said.WHAT TO KNOW: MCAS Miramar Air Show 2019The importance is paramount as accidents have happened in the past. In October of 2004, a stunt pilot completed a loop too low and crashed into the flight line, wrecking the plane and ultimately killing the pilot.The base is also set to receive several F-35 aircraft this January.The annual drill helps the base, military personnel, firefighters and local ambulance companies work together and see if there are any weak points.
