BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on the country's judicial officers and other law enforcers to maintain social justice and harmony by defusing and solving social contradictions.Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting to call on law enforcement officials to learn from Liu Yumei, who had served in grassroots judicial work for more than 20 years.During her service in a local community in southwest Chongqing Municipality, Liu Yumei had successfully reconciled more than 1,500 civil disputes and defused more than 10 possibly violent events. Liu died of illness from overwork in Jan. 2010 at only 46 years old.Zhou said law enforcement organs should regard preventing and reducing social disputes as an important job, and judicial officers should help people with their problems during their law-enforcement practices.

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhuanet) -- An autopsy began Monday on Berlin zoo's superstar polar bear Knut who died suddenly on Saturday, media reports said.However, it remained unclear when the results from the post-mortem examination of Knut would be published."I cannot give you a timeline. We will inform the public when we know what the exact cause was," AFP quoted spokeswoman Claudia Bienek as saying.Knut died while sunbathing at Berlin zoo in Germany in front of visitors. The four-year-old swivelled around several times before falling backwards into the water in his enclosure.Witnesses said he suffered a series of convulsions and appeared to have had an epileptic fit or a heart attack.Knut was born in 2006 to a female bear who rejected him at birth. He was hand-raised by his keeper at the zoo. Films were made about him and he appeared on the front cover of Vanity Fair magazine and earned the zoo about 7.11 million U.S. dollars.More than 15,000 Knut fans have so far paid tribute to him on Berlin zoo's website. Hundreds more have flocked to the zoo in person to lay flowers at his enclosure.

No casualties are found.The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 a.m..Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire.The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. The fire engulfed Tower A and B, with Tower C intact.

NEW DELHI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government has ordered food originating from Japan to be tested for radiation in the wake of explosions at a Japanese nuclear plant following a devastating earthquake-tsunami last Friday, reported local media Wednesday.Authorized officers of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Indian ports, airports have been asked by the government to get food originating from Japan after March 11, 2011 to be tested for radiation, according to Press Trust of India.The Department of Revenue, Government of India, has also been requested to advise all the customs points in the country where imported food is cleared, to test samples on similar lines, according to the report.
