For generations, Dave Walton's family has owned a farm in Wilton, Iowa.“We bought this farm in 1901 so I’m fourth generation of this farm," Walton says. “We grow soybeans, corn, alfalfa; pasture beef, cattle, sheep."Walton knows the impact of the trade war firsthand. “Soybeans have been hit hardest, they were one of the first products to get tariffs," he says. The farmer says tariffs have brought a level of uncertainty soybean farmers haven't seen in a long time. “China is our largest export buyer overseas," Walton says. "Our biggest buyer of soybeans essentially has been out of the market for about a year and a half now. That dropped our price almost a bushel.”The price change for many Iowans like Walton has left its mark.“We’ve really tightened the belt, we had to look at every expenditure. We haven’t really purchased any equipment, haven’t replaced any equipment. We’ve done the repair work ourselves," he says. "The family living budget is down to the bone so we’ve really had to tighten the belt to get through this.”He says waiting for a trade deal between the U.S. and China has been an emotional roller coaster. "You know, you hear they get together and get some positive news out of D.C., or whoever they’re negotiating, and you have a little bit of hope, and a week later it blows up with a tweet sometimes or the Chinese say ‘no, we’re not going to honor that deal,’ " he says. It's a waiting game he says can't go on forever. "The clock’s been ticking for a while,” Walton says. “We’ve made adjustments and the market starting to come back. If we can stay at this level, we could probably ride it out for a little while. But I would say another year and a half, two years … if we don’t have a deal, things are going to get pretty grim.” 1774

HONG KONG — China has officially ratified a plan to write a national security law for Hong Kong, exerting Beijing's broader, new control over the semi-autonomous territory in a bid to prevent a return of the months of often-violent protests last year. China’s ceremonial legislature approved a decision by the ruling Communist Party to impose national security laws on Hong Kong. The Beijing-backed Hong Kong government sought to assure its citizens that the law would not infringe on their freedoms. The pro-democracy opposition described the move as the end of the core values that set the former British colony apart from the rest of China. 655

Feeding your dog a raw meat-based diet is seen by some owners as a healthier and more natural alternative to commercially available pet food. But researchers warned in a new study that many of the raw meat products for dogs they looked at contained high levels of bacteria that could put both people and animals at risk of infection. The researchers, who were based in Sweden, analyzed 60 frozen packs of raw dog food made by 10 manufacturers in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and the UK for bacteria that could pose a health risk.Thirty-one packs contained levels of bacteria that exceeded the threshold set by the European Union, including salmonella, which was found in four packs, and 701

Former first lady Barbara Bush didn't consider herself a Republican after Donald Trump took office, according to a forthcoming book obtained by USA Today about the matriarch of a GOP political dynasty."After Trump's rise, she saw it as a party she could not continue to support, a party she no longer recognized -- even as one of her grandsons, George P. Bush, was on the ballot as a Republican running for re-election as Texas land commissioner," author Susan Page wrote in an excerpt adapted from her new book, "The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty." The excerpt was published Wednesday in 633
