CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – At a virtual hearing on Tuesday, a San Diego judge ordered that the name could be revealed of the teenager who’s accused of killing a woman on a Carlsbad trail. Images of his face, however, were ordered to remain private.17-year-old Haloa Beaudet's defense counsel denies the allegations.He is suspected of stabbing Lisa Thorborg on Hosp Grove trail in November. “His DNA was found on the victim. We have him running on surveillance camera [video] away from the murder scene in a time that's consistent with the time of death,” said a detective.The prosecution showed a surveillance camera image of him running barefoot on the street, away from the trail at 11:25 a.m. on the day that Thorborg died. “We feel that she died at about 11:10 a.m. so that's about 15 minutes after she was murdered,” said the detective.Other surveillance camera images that were shown in the hearing captured the teen on the same trail in the days after the murder.Detectives said that a few days later, he was arrested for prowling on the trail. Once taken into custody, a sample of his DNA was taken. “Ultimately, they found that DNA from [Haloa’s swabs] matched the male DNA on Ms. Thorborg's shorts,” said a detective.Detectives also said that a pair of flip flops that they believe belong to the teen were discovered near Thorborg. His defense attorney argued that Thorborg may have discovered and picked up those flip flops, which was how she got his DNA on her.The teen's attorney said that there's no motive for a murder. His grandmother told the judge that he has no history of violence.The judge decided that the case can move forward.Beaudet’s next hearing is scheduled for January 25th.The teen is ordered to remain in-custody for the time being. 1770

(KGTV) - The Recon Challenge at Camp Pendleton takes Marines through a grueling 30-mile course, comprised of obstacles including a 1,000-yard open-ocean swim, mountainous terrain, and underwater knot-tying exercises.The challenge honors the fallen Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. Participants run in the name of a fallen Marine, paying tribute by hanging dog tags on the iconic battlefield cross at the finish line."It's probably a collection of some of the toughest people on the planet, I mean it's, imagine a marathon but you're carrying 50 pounds plus you're swimming in the ocean, the pools, and doing these other events," said Adam Sorensen, who was medically retired from the Marine Corps two years ago. (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than million worth of narcotics in a single vehicle stop this week.CBP says officers stopped a 55-year-old driver at about 4 a.m. at the Calexico Port of Entry and referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where an x-ray imaging system identified anomalies in the vehicle.A search of the vehicle turned up 20 packages of fentanyl weighing 48 pounds, and 121 packages of methamphetamine weighing 517 pounds hidden in the floor, gas tank, seats, and spare tire.The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security officials. 628

Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part.
