Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Blake Davis' story is filled with chapters of love and laughter."We used to call him a smiley meatball! He was always a big guy, always in the 100th percentile in terms of growth and just really animated and really fun to be around," said Blake's mom, Leah. But at 14 months old, their seemingly healthy baby stopped breathing at the park. He was revived and rushed to the hospital. "He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, so high blood pressure of the lungs," said Rob, Blake's dad.Doctors told Rob and Leah that this was rare in children. "We were overwhelmed lost, devastated, had no clue what was going on, what his future would be, and felt totally helpless," the couple said.As the months passed inside the hospital, friends and family asked what they could do to help. The family asked that they do something kind in Blake's honor, and share the story on a Facebook page created for Blake."It was this really, really beautiful, uplifting thing happening in the world during our darkest moments," said Leah. Blake was eventually released from the hospital, but months later, his condition then worsened. He needed a lung transplant."Ultimately, on January 2 of 2019, we got the news he was unanimously accepted onto the lung transplant registry. And that was the day he passed," said Leah.But the good deeds continued. "There are a lot that don't cost a penny. Helping someone at the grocery store, planting a tree, cleaning a beach," said Leah. What started in San Diego spread across the country and then the world. "Any selfless act whether it costs money or is free, anything positive and uplifting," said Rob.The Davis family created a website to document the movement sparked by Blake. People can share kind acts inspired by Blake through the website's "good deed tracker."The family also created kindness cards people can use to help share Blake's story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least one person was injured and another person was trapped following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 on Wednesday.San Diego Police said three vehicles were involved in a collision on southbound I-5 at SR-905 just before 4:30 p.m.An officer received minor injuries in the crash, according to SDPD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Californians associate “The Big One” with a devastating earthquake, but U.S. Geological Survey experts say a potentially larger threat could hit the state in the form of an “ARkStorm.”SPECIAL REPORT: Complete coverage of California's winter stormsExperts from every scientific field related to a potentially disastrous weather event gathered in 2010 to create the ARkStorm Scenario report for the USGS, imagining aspects of flooding of biblical proportions reaching the Western United States.“These storms do pose a real risk to California, in some ways far greater than that of earthquakes,” experts said in the study.The ARkStorm Scenario report reads like a Hollywood post-apocalyptic film script. Weeks of rain and snow are followed by catastrophic floods, landslides, and property and infrastructure damage which would cripple California’s economy.While the name “ARk” brings to mind a lifeboat scenario, ARkStorm project manager Dale Cox and chief scientist Lucile Jones coined the abbreviation to represent “atmospheric river.” A common term for meteorologists, these rivers in the sky work like highways for water vapor which comes to a screeching halt when it reaches land.A typical atmospheric river is the Pineapple Express, which pushes moisture from the tropics to the West Coast. It was a Pineapple Express that reached San Diego on Valentine’s Day, bringing warmer rain and lower snow levels, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Alexander Tardy.RELATED: Mega storm could cause billions in damage to California, report showsModels in the ARkStorm report show multiple areas of submergence in central San Diego. Mission Beach, which routinely sees flooding during heavy rain, is underwater in the ARkStorm scenario. The same amount of precipitation predicted in the ARkStorm Scenario fell in 2017, says Cox. What made the difference in the impact, he says, is that the rain fell in 80 days instead of the 23 days imagined in the report.The West Coast will get notice, but not much, Tardy says.
