Ronald “Khalis” Bell, a co-founder and singer of the group Kool & the Gang, has died. He was 68. Publicist Sujata Murthy says Bell died Wednesday morning at his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands with his wife by his side. The cause of death has not been released. Kool & the Gang grew from jazz roots in the 1960s to become one of the major groups of the 1970s, blending jazz, funk, R&B and pop. After a brief downturn, the group enjoyed a return to stardom in the ’80s. The group won a Grammy in 1978 for their work on the soundtrack for “Saturday Night Fever.”In addition to vocals, Bell also played the sax for the band. RICHMOND, Ind. — Nearly 77 years after a Marine from Indiana was killed in the South Pacific during World War II his remains will return to his hometown on Thursday.Marine Corps Pfc. Louis Wiesehan Jr., 20, of Richmond, was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands in November 1943, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.Over several days of intense fighting, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 wounded. The Japanese were virtually annihilated, the DPAA said. Wiesehan was killed on the second day of the battle, Nov. 21, 1943. His remains were reportedly buried in Division Cemetery on Betio Island.According to the DPAA, the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company centralized all of the American remains found on Tarawa at Lone Palm Cemetery in 1946 for later repatriation, however, almost half of the known casualties were never found. No recovered remains could be associated with Wiesehan so in Oct. 1949, a Board of Review declared him "non-recoverable."In 2014, History Flight Inc., a nonprofit organization, located Cemetery 27. Excavations at the site uncovered multiple sets of remains which were turned over to DPAA in 2015. DPAA said Wiesehan's remains were identified through anthropological analysis as well as material evidence. Scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA analysis.Wiesehan's remains were accounted for on Sept. 23, 2019.The Greenfield Police Department posted on Facebook that Wiesehan's remains will be passing through Greenfield on Thursday, between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on their way from the Indianapolis International Airport to Richmond. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — California has become the third state to declare a state of emergency due to the threat of the coronavirus.Gov. Gavin Newsom told reporters Wednesday that the state is declaring a statewide emergency in order to take advantage of additional government resources. The declaration comes after developments that a California patient died of coronavirus after reportedly being infected on a cruise from San Francisco to Mexico from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21.The victim was an elderly adult with underlying health issues and was in isolation at the time of death, Placer County health officials said. The cruise ship that the victim had been on earlier is currently being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another passenger who is infected is in stable condition at a Sonoma County hospital.The ship is currently at sea, but testing kits will be flown out to its crew for passengers to be tested before the ship docks in San Francisco."There’s a reason that we didn’t want the ship in the Port of San Francisco and in the state of California at this time," Newsom said.
