YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday.Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters.The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped.An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, Tuesday called for greater efforts to develop the economies of ethnic minority areas.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remark at the closing ceremony of a seminar on ethnic minorities work for provincial- and ministerial-level officials in Beijing Tuesday.Ethnic minority issues are important and the Communist Party of China (CPC) must properly handle them while governing the country, said Jia, who is also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He said officials must unswervingly implement CPC Central Committee policies concerning ethnic minority issues.He urged officials to improve the livelihood of ethnic minority groups and promote unity among China's different ethnic groups.In properly handling ethnic minority issues, the key is to strengthen the Party's leadership and enhance the abilities of officials at all levels, he said.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also attended the closing ceremony.

BERLIN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany pledged on Tuesday to enhance their efforts in coordinating macroeconomic policies and opposing trade and investment protectionism, according to a joint communique issued after a meeting between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his German counterpart Angela Merkel.The meeting, focusing on China's relations with Germany and Europe, was held at the Meseberg Palace, 70 km north of Germany's capital of Berlin, on the eve of the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.China and Germany are two of the world's largest exporters. China surpassed Germany last year to become the number one exporter.The communique said both sides agreed to attach importance to a series of dialogue mechanisms, including the strategic dialogue, the dialogue between nations ruled by law and human rights dialogue.China and Germany also agreed to expand political mutual trust and deepen strategic coordination between China and Europe. The two countries would like to promote Sino-European economic ties by enhancing negotiation and amplifying cooperation of mutual benefit.Germany would continue urging the EU to recognize China's full market economy status as soon as possible. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) in China in September rose 6.14 percent year on year to 8.384 billion U.S. dollars, bringing the country's FDI inflow for the first nine months back to pre-financial crisis level.The September figure brought the total amount for the first nine months of this year to 74.34 billion U.S. dollars, rising 16.6 percent year on year, spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Yao Jian said Friday at a press conference.The January-September FDI figure suggested China's FDI inflow had returned to pre-crisis level, Yao said.According to MOC statistics, China received 74.37 billion U.S. dollars of FDI in the first nine months of 2008.The September FDI increase quickened from the year-on-year growth of 1.38 percent in August.The stable increase in China's FDI inflow was mainly boosted by the country's strong economic momentum, said Lu Zhengwei, chief analyst at the Industrial Bank.Although China's economic growth had eased, it was still strong, Lu said.China's GDP increased 10.3 percent year on year in the second quarter of this year, decelerating from first quarter's 11.9 percent. The National Bureau of Statistics is scheduled to release economic data for the third quarter next week.China's manufacturing sector received 47.6 percent of FDI inflow in the first nine months, while services industry got 45 percent, Yao said.A total of 19,209 foreign-invested enterprises were approved for establishment during the period, up 17.5 percent from one year earlier.Yao expected China's FDI inflow to hit 420 billion U.S. dollars in the country's 11th Five-year Plan (2006-2010) period, which was 1.5 times as much as that in the 2001-2005 period. This would make China the world's second largest destination for FDI.During the first nine months, China's outbound investment, excluding the financial sector, totaled 36.27 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.4 percent, he said. Some 30.9 percent of the investment outflow was for acquisitions of companies.
