Tyson Foods may lay off more than 400 workers in the South Bay in an effort to become more efficient and save money.It would be the biggest layoff in San Diego County in more than a year.The company filed a layoff notice with the state this month saying it had to let 401 workers go from its Circle Foods label plant in Otay Mesa. "Tyson Foods, Inc. regrets that its team members at the San Diego, California facility must be permanently displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closing with the least possible disruption of lives of the tema members, their families, and the community," the notice says.Many of the workers make Mexican frozen food on the factory's assemblyline.A team from the San Diego Workforce Partnership has already been to the factory twice to help the workers find new opportunities. Also, Windsor Foods is buying Tyson's plant to expand its Mexican frozen food offerings. While it does plan to eliminate three tortilla lines, company VIce President Paul Taylor said the Windsor hopes to keep as many of the workers as possible.Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said he doesn't see the layoffs as a larger trend. After all, the unemployment rate is now near a 17-year-low of 3.3 percent. The layoffs are expected to occur by the end of April. Tyson in a statement said it is working on a transition plan with Windsor Foods, but will retain some operations here. United States' Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday the Trump administration will announce more sanctions against Russia on Monday.On CBS's "Face the Nation," Haley said the Treasury Department will announce the new sanctions and insisted the US has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons."You will see that Russian sanctions will be coming down," said Haley, reiterating what she said earlier on Fox News. Two New York Police Department detectives took turns raping a handcuffed 18-year-old woman in the back seat of their police van in Coney Island last month, according to the Kings County District Attorney's office.Eddie Martins, 37, and Richard Hall, 33, of the Brooklyn South Narcotics unit, were arraigned Monday on a total of 50 charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act and second-degree kidnapping, the district attorney's office said.Both detectives pleaded not guilty to all counts, according to the district attorney's office. Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. "It's the first time I ever met either one of those two gentleman, but you feel a sense of responsibility to them."McCormick joined the station in 2007 as a reporter, and was promoted to anchor in 2014. Smeltzer joined the station in February.  1310

US President Donald Trump says China has agreed to cut tariffs on cars it imports from the United States.Trump made the announcement in a tweet late Sunday in the United States, saying Beijing will "reduce and remove" the tariffs, which currently stand at 40%. He didn't specify when the change would happen or what the new tariff level would be.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang declined to comment Monday on Trump's statement, referring questions to "the relevant authorities." The Chinese Commerce Ministry, which typically makes announcements regarding tariffs, didn't respond to a faxed request for comment.Trump's tweet comes after he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on Saturday to hold off on further tariffs in the trade war between the two countries for the time being.
