SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some quarantined cruise ship passengers at MCAS Miramar are voicing concerns after two days inside. Steven and Michele Smith were on board the Grand Princess cruise ship, which docked in Oakland Monday after more than 20 passengers tested positive for coronavirus. They were flown to San Diego Wednesday. Nearly 500 passengers are now being quarantined at the base. The Smiths are symptom free but frustrated. They've been in the same clothes since Monday. Their luggage is missing, after a possible mix-up with the baggage of passengers sent to other bases. The Smiths sent 10news photos of a laundry room they're not allowed to use and a lobby full of unclaimed luggage."Ours had a blue tie on it and none of those in the lobby have a blue tie. Somewhere the deck got shuffled and our luggage went wherever," said Steven Smith.They Smiths believe lack of resources and organization are also causing issues. They haven't been tested for coronavirus and have yet to receive a temperature check."Our friends being quarantined at the others bases are getting two temperature checks a day ... It feels like maybe there could be some concern ... they're not keeping up with our health," said Michele Smith.10news reached out to the base and officials at the Department of Health and Human Services about the Smiths' concerns and are waiting to hear back. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scripps Research is partnering with transit and healthcare workers to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.Scientists started analyzing data from smart watches and fitness trackers in March to detect if someone is infected with a virus like COVID-19 before they are aware of it.“When your heart beats faster than usual, it can mean that you’re coming down with a cold, flu, coronavirus or other viral infection." Jennifer Radin, PhD, Epidemiologist at Scripps Research says sleep and activity levels are good indicators as well.Dr. Radin is leading the study and said the coronavirus was the impetus to get the project off the ground. Dr. Radin said detection is key to save lives and stop the spread."If we can know where these hot spots are quicker and faster, public health officials can respond quicker," she said. Currently, she said data from the CDC takes a couple weeks. The activity monitors allow scientists at Scripps Research to have instant access to trends.The study chose frontline workers because, "due to the nature of their jobs, transit and healthcare workers are at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19 and other contagious respiratory illnesses,” Dr. Radin, PhD, said. Monica Valencia is a Senior Transit Store Clerk at MTS and lost her father in law Friday to COVID-19. He just turned 60 and had symptoms a week before he was admitted to the hospital. She said two weeks after he was admitted he was gone."I want to do anything and everything I can so every other family can avoid this situation." She said she was glad to hear about the study and hope it helps in the future."We have to start somewhere and we have to start documenting things, and starting here it's only going to help things moving forward," she said with determination.Fitbit donated 500 wristbands that scientists distributed to San Diego Metropolitan Transit System workers and nurses and physicians at Scripps Health.So far they study garnered 34,000 participants and Dr. Radin hopes to bring in even more data. "Today we're actually going to send 10 more right now," Lopez said. They've served about 90 customers in three days. The hit right now is 30 percent, but Lopez said the 37 year old business is focused on community. Across town, D.Z. Son of the founders, Elan Akin, said he often sees an older crowd.Customers, like Philip McCabe, say they normally see more people. The lunch rush Wednesday mean about 7 people standing in the deli with lots of space in between. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some men are sharing their story of an unlikely redemption after police spotted them spray-painting graffiti on a street in El Cajon.Gripped by the message of the recent protests, Dre, Dan, and Gee did something they've never done before. The three, all of them artists, ended up on Heart Drive with spray paint."Just wanted to put up something, so when people drive by, it says 'love.' It says 'peace,'" said Dan."We are about art. People need to see the message," said Dre.Around 2 a.m., El Cajon Police Sergeant Mike Murphy pulled up to the three, before two more officers arrived. The three friends prepared to be arrested. Sgt. Murphy surveyed what they painted: peace signs, the words 'BLM' and 'Justice For Floyd.'He talked to them about the impact of graffiti. The men apologized. There would be no arrest. The three friends offered to fix it and Sgt. Murphy said he would help."That's a good feeling. It's the same as the message we were out there painting that night," said Dan.That same day, the men turned up with paint and rollers and together with Sgt. Murphy, they covered the spray paint. The three men decided they would funnel their passions into an art installation with the theme of unity. Sgt. Murphy agreed to help them find a venue for it. Dre and Dan say their encounter with him shows them that police can be part of the solution."Not every cop is out to kill black people. There are good cops out there, and I think people need to start understanding and noticing," said Dre.After the art piece is complete, Sgt. Murphy plans to submit a request to El Cajon officials in hopes of displaying it on city property. 1664
