There are a range of reconstruction options, or survivors can choose to "go flat."If they do that, they might only use a silicone prosthesis. But volunteers with knitting needles at Mercy West Hospital are providing a second choice."It helps you relax," Vicki Wright said.Wright knits on her porch in Ross Township, Ohio, her knitting needles quietly clicking away."Each pair takes me 3 to 4 hours," she said.Wright's not talking about socks or blankets. She's creating a lifeline back to normalcy for women who will get her work."I find them really comfortable," Sue Yates said.Under her clothes, Yates is wearing "Knitted Knockers" — soft, comfortable prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.They first came to the attention of Dr. Anna Sobolewski, a breast surgeon at Mercy West, thanks to a patient who had had a double mastectomy. That woman learned about them in a support group and chose them over her heavier silicone prosthesis."When I saw her back in the office for a visit, she pulled out the knitted knocker from her bra and said, 'This is the best thing ever,'" Sobolewski said.Wanting to give her survivors another option, Sobolewski went to the auxiliary."And...asked me if volunteers would be interested in doing a project like this," said Alice Wanninger, Mercy West's director of volunteer and auxiliary services.They got on it, knitting all different cup sizes with guidelines: They must be 100% cotton — so they're soft and don't irritate surgical scars — and they have to be washable.Wright said she loves the work. For her, it's a chance to use the knitting knowledge passed to her by her grandmother to help others."She would be pleased, too," she said. "It was passed down – a family tradition with love."Wright has stitched about 50 pairs since she started the work last winter. That's making a difference for women who've gone flat after surgery.Sobolewski said Knitted Knockers fill a void as patients go through a tough journey. They help with self-image after surgery."I think it's an appearance thing – it's just all in how you want to feel about yourself," Yates said. "How you wanna look."She said they're more comfortable and not as heavy as the silicon."Women helping women — that's what it's about," Wanninger said. Citing deadlock in negotiations between the administration and congressional Democrats to create a second stimulus bill, President Trump signed four executive orders Saturday aimed at helping Americans struggling with the ongoing pandemic.Here is a look at what each one says and what next steps could be.Unemployment benefitsOne of the most highly-anticipated and most debated executive order is focused on increased weekly benefits for those claiming unemployment. President Trump’s executive order would make it 0 a week and require states to provide 25 percent of the funds.The CARES Act had added an additional 0 a week to what states offered in unemployment benefits. The funding came from the federal government for that added weekly benefit, and ended August 1.It's unclear whether states have the money or the will to fund the new plan. Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says it would cost his state alone 0 million to provide the extra benefit through the rest of 2020.He is one of several who have come out since Saturday’s announcement and expressed concern at states being able to afford to participate in the extra unemployment benefits.Many states are already facing budget crunches caused by the pandemic. Asked at a news conference how many governors had signed on to participate, Trump answered: “If they don’t, they don’t. That’s up to them.”By Sunday night, Trump clarified how the process could work, telling reporters states could apply to have the federal government provide all or part of the 0 payments. Decisions would be made state by state, he said.On CNN’s “State of the Nation” on Sunday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said conflicting things about whether the federal money was contingent on an additional contribution from the states.Initially Kudlow said that “for an extra 0, we will lever it up. We will pay three-quarters, and the states will pay 25 percent.” In the same interview, though, he later said that “at a minimum, we will put in 300 bucks ... but I think all they (the states) have to do is put up an extra dollar, and we will be able to throw in the extra 0.”A clarifying statement from the White House said the “funds will be available for those who qualify by, among other things, receiving 0/week of existing assistance and certify that they have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.”Evictions moratoriumThe previous moratorium, which was part of Congress-approved aid earlier this year, ended at the end of July, leaving an estimated 12 million households potentially at risk that were protected. Some states have taken action on their own to extend the moratorium, but not all.The original ban on evictions applied to mortgages that were backed by federal funds. By some estimates, this only covered about a fourth of the country’s rental units. The majority of units have private mortgages or owners and were not covered by the ban.The new executive order signed Saturday states "the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Director of the CDC shall consider whether any measures temporarily halting residential evictions of any tenants for failure to pay rent are reasonably necessary to prevent the further spread of COVID-19."The president’s plan calls on the Housing and Urban Development and Treasury secretaries to identify any available federal funds to “provide temporary financial assistance to renters and homeowners" who are "struggling" to pay mortgages and rents.On Sunday, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said the order will put a complete stop to evictions.“The health secretary has the authority, working with the CDC to declare it an emergency. And, therefore, there will be no evictions,” Kudlow said in an interview with CNN. He reaffirmed that if Health and Human Services declares an emergency, evictions will be stopped.Kudlow added that the executive order sets up “a process. A mechanism. I can't predict the future all together. All the federally financed, single families and multifamilies will be covered as they have been.”There has been no update yet on how long this process could take to identify available funds, and how much assistance the administration could provide.Payroll taxesTrump’s executive order on payroll taxes is a postponement of the collected taxes until the end of the year, and defers the due date for the portion of taxes paid by employees. Federal payroll taxes are roughly 6.2 percent for Social Security and 1.45 percent for Medicare.The deferment would only apply to employees making less than roughly 0,000 a year.Think of it like the deferring of federal income taxes, American still had to file and pay their taxes but they weren’t due until July 15.The payroll taxes would still be due at the end of the year, and companies control whether the taxes are withheld from paychecks or not. There is no word yet if companies will continue to collect the payroll taxes from paychecks in order to pay at the end of the year.President Trump during Saturday’s press conference on the executive orders said if he was elected president he would work to forgive the levy and make cuts to payroll taxes. However, many are clarifying that the power to change tax laws lies with Congress and not with the president.Student loansThe fourth executive order directs the Education Department to extend the student loan relief until the end of the year.Loan payments and the accruing of interest on federally-held students loans is on hold right now until September 30. The executive order would move that date until December, and potentially longer. Trump eluded to possibly extending the deadline out further.Trump originally waived student loan interest by executive order in March, and the policy was clarified to include pausing loan payments and included in the CARES Act passed by Congress. 5841

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. She was reportedly able to fight off the alligator and call 911 for help. Gillette was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to the FWC, she was treated and released. She sustained non-life threatening injuries.The alligator is believed to 5 to 6-feet long.The FWC and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are working to catch the alligator. A trapper has also been called to the scene.The public beach access to Lake Hernando is closed while a wildlife trapper searches for the alligator.  923

  

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Thousands of sailors left Naval Air Base Coronado Friday afternoon, to embark on a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific Region. Its colossal presence is intimidating. Impressive. Indisputable.“We comprise the most mobile, most capable, and most lethal fighting force on the entire planet,” Captain Brett Crozier, Commanding Officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, said. But the strength of the ship isn’t in the hardware. It’s in the 6,000 sailors who will call it home for the next seven months. Friday is their farewell to their families. “Already I’ve been crying like all day,” Stephanie Hastings said. The young mother of two is saying goodbye to her husband, Christopher, for the first time. This is the 26-year-old’s first deployment. Emotions overcome her, even though her toddlers do not understand. “He [three-year-old Mason] doesn’t really know what’s going on. He said he wants to go to Target today. He doesn’t want to come here,” Hastings laughed. But long-time military wife Fama Nyassi has no tears. She and her two daughters are sending off their father, Ousom, for the fifth time. “Daddy is not around, but Mommy is here. I will take care of everything!” Nyassi said. For the next seven months, the sailors will travel to the Indo-Pacific region to provide maritime security and regional safety. For EMC Nyassi, it’s comforting to know that his wife has got his back at home. “I can’t thank her enough. She’s the rock of the family. I can’t thank her enough,” EMC Nyassi said. Those left behind say their strength comes from their love for their spouse and for their country. “I tell him all the time that I am really proud,” Hastings said of her husband. “So proud of him. He’s the hero of the family,” Nyassi said of her husband. The last time the USS Roosevelt left for a seven-month deployment was to support “Operations Inherent Resolve” and “Freedom’s Sentinel” between October 2017 and May 2018. This time, the sailors are scheduled to return in August 2020. 2023

  

COVID-19 will continue to impact the housing market heading into 2021.If you're looking to buy, experts say the first few months of the year are the time to do it.A housing forecast out Wednesday from Realtor.com finds mortgage rates will stay low, but only for the first half of the year.“We expect mortgage rates to increase near 3.4% by the end of the year, which would in any other year be record lows, but following on the heels of 2020, 3.4% is up a bit, but still historically low broadly speaking,” said Danielle Hale, Chief Economist at Realtor.com.Home prices have gone up by double digit percentages over the last couple of months. Some of that is expected to slow down as mortgage rates go up.Realtor.com is forecasting just below a 6% increase in home prices for all of 2021, but affordability is going to be a growing concern.“The housing market has been historically challenging for first-time homebuyers, with prices rising as dramatically as they have in the second part of 2020, first-time homebuyers are seeing a bigger gap between what they need to bring to the market for a down payment and what existing homeowners have in the way of home equity to use to trade up,” said Hale.If you already own a home, you may be thinking about selling when you see what it's worth now.Sellers are expected to continue to have the upper hand throughout 2021, with more buyers than homes for sale.You may see more competition with home construction ramping up, leading to more options available.“For existing homeowners, in particular who want to stay up in their home, the fact that we have still low mortgage rates in 2021 creates opportunities for them to consider remodeling to make their home a more suitable place for them to age in place,” said Hale.Another trend that's expected to continue in 2021 is interest in the suburbs. People have been moving out of cities as they're working remotely. Hale says the rising home prices and higher interest rates in 2021 could drive this trend as well. 2014
