UPLAND, Calif. (AP) — Investigators on Wednesday were trying to determine why a California woman allegedly fatally injured her infant daughter, dropped her young son off a second-story apartment building landing and then jumped herself.After being medically cleared, Tierra Ortega, 24, was booked for investigation of homicide, attempted homicide and child abuse resulting in death, said Capt. Marcelo Blanco of the Upland Police Department.Ortega's booking photo showed her face bruised and scraped with one eye swollen shut.Her 1?-year-old son remained hospitalized in stable condition with a broken foot and other minor injuries, Blanco said."We don't have a motive yet," Blanco said.The events unfolded late Tuesday morning in Upland, a small city at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in the inland region about an hour's drive east of Los Angeles.A neighbor called 911 to report that a child was screaming or crying and then saw the woman was holding the child on a second-story landing, according to police."The mother proceeded to release the toddler, who fell to the ground below. Upon officers arriving on scene, they noticed the child on the floor and the mother subsequently jumped from the second story landing head first," a police statement said.Police then checked the second-story apartment and found the woman's approximately 7-month-old daughter inside. She wasn't breathing.Her breathing was restored but she died at a hospital, Blanco said.The cause of her death will be determined but she had a possible skull fracture and internal injuries, he said.Video from KCAL-TV showed the woman sitting on grass outside the building with her hands handcuffed behind her. In the surveillance video, a vehicle is seen pulling up just before 10:30 p.m. A man gets out and walks toward statue and pushes it to check the weight. He then walks back toward the truck, before turning around and eventually picking up the statue. Finally, he tosses it into the truck and drives off."Disappointed for sure," said Lawrie.Lawrie and his wife Lynn are both at a loss."Feels sad and empty because he was such a part of us. Customers are really upset," said Lynn Lawrie."The Baker Man" was first purchased at an antique warehouse in Corona. They believe it's fiberglass and weighed less than 100 pounds. TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Police are asking for the public's help identifying someone who reportedly stole COVID-19 test kits from a downtown health center.According to a Facebook post from the department, it happened at the El Rio Health Center at 839 West Congress Street just before 8 p.m. Surveillance video shows the suspect disguised as a delivery driver, walking into the health center and walking out with approximately 29 test kits.At the time, employees were getting ready to close the facility. Staff didn't notice the missing test kits until the next morning, TPD said.The suspect is described as a Hispanic man in his 30s, between 5'9" and 5'11" with a large build. He has a full beard, with some greying, and left the scene in a reddish-colored Dodge Charger, or similar vehicle.Police emphasized that the tests are essentially useless without a fully equipped lab, and professional staff to interpret the results.
