FALLBROOK (KGTV) - One person is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of a road in Fallbrook with her husband.CHP officers say the 60-year-old woman was walking with her husband just after 5 p.m. northbound on the east shoulder in the 2700 block of Gird Road north of Laketree Drive. An approaching pickup truck heading northbound left the roadway and struck the woman. The truck stopped for a moment before fleeing the scene northbound on Gird Rd.North County Fire Protection District and CHP responded and crews began life saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Her 60-year-old husband was not injured.The truck involved in the crash is described as an older model pickup truck that's dark in color. The truck will likely have damage to the right front side.Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the area to learn more about what happened.Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspected vehicle or information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 858-637-3800. 1060

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido Police announced Saturday the arrest of a 13-year-old boy in a case involving Xanax overdoses at Rincon Middle School.Six children aged 11 to 13 years were found to have taken the anti-anxiety drug at lunch time on October 25.Three of the children required emergency medical treatment.  All six have since recovered with no lasting effects.RELATED: Juveniles hospitalized after taking XanaxEscondido Police arrested the juvenile suspect Monday after an investigation. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A man has died after firefighters found him inside a North County home where a fire had ignited Sunday afternoon.Escondido Police said the fire was reported in the 600 block of Waverly Place just before 11:30 a.m. When firefighters and police officers arrived, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the home.Firefighters entered the home to battle the flames and found an adult man unresponsive inside. The man was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he later died, police said. His name has not been publicly released, pending notification of his family.The cause of the fire and the man's death is under investigation, police say. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recuperative care facility run by Interfaith Community Services in Escondido is bright and clean. On the surface, it’s hard to tell the residents inside are just starting their recovery from a low point in their lives.“I don’t know how I would have made it this far,” said Dough Yorba about his chance encounter with Interfaith.He lost his job around Christmas last year and soon after wound up in the hospital for extreme back pain. That’s when he got another diagnosis: cancer.“Oh, I freaked out. Both my parents died from cancer,” he said.Without any income, it got worse when he lost his apartment and transportation.“I literally had no place to go.”But as he was about to start chemotherapy, a social worker at the hospital mentioned the recuperative care facility in Escondido and he jumped at the opportunity.“Every aspect of life is covered here. Your meals are wonderful. The staff goes out of the way to help you with so many things,” he described.As helpful as the facility is, it only has 32 beds.“We project there is a need for another 50-100 beds,” said Greg Anglea, CEO of Interfaith Community Services. “Maybe even more than that.”California hospitals have seen an increase in homeless patients. According to Kaiser Health News, hospitals across the state discharged 28% more homeless patients in 2017 than they did in 2015.In January of this year, California implemented a new law aiming to reduce the practice of “homeless dumping.” It requires hospitals to provide homeless patients vaccinations, a meal and clothing before discharging them. Hospitals must also show that they tried to connect the patients with housing services, though patients can refuse or choose their own destination, even if it’s back to the streets.“That’s a needed improvement,” said Anglea of the new law, but noted it still doesn’t solve the main problem of giving continued medical care to discharged homeless patients. 1955

(CNS) - Nearly three-dozen cats were taken in by the San Diego Humane Society after they were left behind inside a condominium in Escondido last month, the agency announced Wednesday.The property manager of a condominium complex in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue called the group on Oct. 22 to report that one of the condo's tenants had abandoned the cats after being evicted, according to the SDHS.Officers from the SDHS' law enforcement division responded to the home and found 31 cats living in "unsanitary conditions" inside the unit, SDHS spokeswoman Nina Thompson said.The cats were taken to SDHS campuses in Escondido and Oceanside for extensive medical exams, Thompson said. One cat had to be euthanized and a majority of the cats were found to be suffering from numerous medical conditions, including upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections and heart murmurs.The remaining 30 cats underwent more than three weeks of intensive medical care and were in the process of being transferred to SDHS' rescue partner Love Your Feral Felines for recovery, Thompson said.The Humane Society encourages the public to report animal emergencies, cruelty or neglect by calling 619-299-7012. 1234
