SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors today extended a state of emergency over a hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County that has killed 20 people, amid a declining number of new cases.Health officials told the supervisors at a special meeting that the drop in case numbers is a sign that efforts to fight the outbreak are working.RELATED: Governor Jerry Brown declares state of emergency over Hepatitis A outbreakThey stressed the need for the county to continue vaccination, prevention and educational efforts that have been put in place since the emergency was declared in September. There were 31 confirmed cases of hepatitis A last month, compared to a peak of 94 cases in August. There have been 544 cases as of Monday in the nearly year-old outbreak, an increase of 28 cases since data was last released on Oct. 24, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. She said some of those 28 cases include ones from as long ago as April that were newly confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Due to the disease's long incubation period, there could potentially be more confirmed cases from October. Wooten said the initial decline is a good sign, but not a reason to declare victory."We could potentially have a second peak," she said. "That's why it's very important for us to continue our vaccination efforts."In San Diego, nearly two-thirds of the victims have been either homeless, users of illicit drugs or both. Much of the county's efforts have focused on those populations, but Wooten said an outbreak in Michigan that has affected men who have sex with men underscores the importance of targeting that community here.Local efforts include holding vaccination events at LGBT centers and distributing educational information to clinics that serve that community, she said. Around .5 million has been spent by the county to fight the spread of the disease, including administering over 90,000 vaccinations and spreading awareness among the public, according to county documents.Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by touching objects or eating food that someone with the virus has handled or by having sex with an infected person. The disease doesn't always cause symptoms, but for those who do, they could experience fever, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes, stomach pain, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools and diarrhea, according to the HHSA.The county and city of San Diego have taken several steps to address the outbreak, including the spraying of a sanitizing formula on streets and sidewalks, the placement of portable hand-washing stations and restrooms in areas where the homeless congregate, and the stepped-up immunization campaign. 2740

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced a 10-year agreement with its airline partners Tuesday to improve transportation access to San Diego International Airport and potentially pave the way for a Metropolitan Transit System trolley route to the airport. The investment pact, totaling more than a half-billion dollars, could eventually fund multiple infrastructure projects to increase transit connections between the city of San Diego and the airport. The agreement includes funding from both the Airport Authority and its associated airlines that serve the San Diego International Airport. The projects, which are not yet approved, could include a multi-modal access road between the city and the airport, which would reduce traffic on Harbor Drive by roughly 45,000 vehicles each day. Harbor Drive is currently the main connection between the city and the airport.RELATED: San Diego's Lindbergh Field moves cell phone lot to new airport locationThe Airport Authority continues to work with the city, MTS, San Diego Association of Governments, Port of San Diego, Caltrans and the North County Transit District to draft potential transit connections. According to the Airport Authority, the reduced congestion on Harbor Drive could allow for the addition of MTS Rapid bus and trolley lines along the street."This agreement ensures that the Airport Authority will have the means to effectively partner with other regional agencies to improve access to the airport through transportation and transit projects," said Airport Authority Board Chair April Boling. The agreement includes 0 million to on- and off-airport transit projects that will be completed collaboratively with the Airport Authority's partner agencies and 5 million for the planned multi-modal corridor. The agreement does not include additional funding for transportation projects from local agencies like SANDAG.RELATED: Start-ups taking flight inside San Diego Airport's Innovation LabAccording to Boling, the agreement could also support projects in the Airport Development Plan like shuttle service from the Old Town Transit Center, a walking and biking path along Harbor Drive and new amenities at Terminal 1 such as bus shelters and information kiosks. All off-airport projects will require approval by the Federal Aviation Administration."The airport and the airlines provide significant economic impact for the region and this is just the latest example of that commitment," said Airport Authority President and CEO Kim Becker. "I sincerely appreciate the airlines' willingness to participate in this agreement and pre-approve a significant investment in transportation and transit infrastructure." 2719

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history. The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. Guests will also get a daily dining credit and discounted self-parking.The hotel plans to premiere its Sun Deck, ENO Market & Pizzeria and Babcock & Story Bar in early August."I think people are excited. I mean, this is a great time of year for Coronado and for the town. The weather's great and our beaches are amazing, and I think people are going to enjoy it," Rapoza said.Hotel del Coronado opened in February 1888 and quickly gained a reputation as a celebrity getaway. The building was declared a National Landmark in 1977 and the property was purchased by Hilton in 2017. 2514
