(KGTV) - A kindergartner walked out of his Santee school, crossed a busy four-lane road and made it to his home more than a mile away, his mother told 10News Thursday.The Cajon Park Elementary student had been placed in a 3rd grade classroom with his upperclassman buddy when his grandmother arrived to pick him up.According to the 5-year-old boy’s parents, the 3rd grade teacher told the boy to pack his things because he was going home and sent him to the office alone.The boy didn’t fully understand the instructions and walked past the office to his home, crossing busy Magnolia Ave.There is only one gate in and out of the school and the boy apparently passed through it undetected.School administrators noticed the boy was missing about half an hour later and told his grandmother, who panicked.The boy’s mother said she realized something was wrong when her doorbell camera sent an alert. She looked at the video and saw her son on the front porch with a woman approaching him.The woman turned out to be a school administrator who had been searching for the boy.Rob Cunningham has a kindergartner at the school and was concerned by the incident.“We trust the school to know where our child is when we drop them off and expect them to be here when we pick them up,” Cunningham said.Santee School District Superintendent Dr. Kristin Baranski responded to 10News’ request for comments, saying the boy was found safe within 15 minutes.She added the school has a practice of sending a buddy with younger children when they need to visit the school office but in this case, the guest teacher did not follow the practice.Administrators will put additional communication practices in place with guest teachers to make sure they are aware of the policy, Baranski said. 1789

The Seattle Times reports Southall Environmental Associates scientist John Durban and marine mammal research director for the nonprofit SR3 Holly Fearnbach recently finished recording drone images of the endangered southern residents and discovered pregnancies amid the J, K, and L pods. According to SR3, whale pregnancies typically last 17-18 months.Pregnancies are not unusual but Tahlequah's pregnancy carries special meaning for a region that grieved the death of her calf along with her. The southern residents are struggling to survive, and most pregnancies are not successful.SR3 says the unsuccessful pregnancies are due to lack of food and nutrition and there are only 73 whales in population. 881

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — Several migrants were saved from a flooded San Ysidro storm drain in two separate rescues.The first rescue took place just before 11 p.m. Thursday. Border Patrol agents say they found three people trying to illegally enter the U.S. near a drainage tube about two miles west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The three people told agents that others were still inside the drain as heavy rainfall began to flood the tube.With the help of San Diego Fire-Rescue, one woman was quickly pulled to safety from the drainage tube before crews saved 13 more people through a manhole leading into the drain.RELATED: Teen found hiding in car dashboard at Calexico West Port of EntrySeven of those 17 people were taken to a nearby hospital.Then at about 1:15 a.m. Friday, border agents reported more migrants were possibly trapped in the same drain. SDFD crews and lifeguards returned and pulled one woman from the drain. Border Patrol agents also found two people near the exit of the tube. SEATTLE (AP) — Since September, six sea lions have died from gunshot wounds in central Puget Sound and Kitsap County, Washington.The Seattle Times reports that another seven are suspected to have died from "acute trauma" caused by humans, including a decomposed sea lion with its head sliced off found washed ashore Tuesday in a West Seattle cove.That's according to Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network, a group that responds to reports of stranded or dead sea lions.Michael Milstein, a NOAA Fisheries spokesman, has confirmed the deaths of five California sea lions in West Seattle, including four that died of gunshot wounds.NOAA Fisheries law-enforcement agents are investigating these crimes, which are prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.Between 1998 and 2017, National Geographic reported up to 700 California sea lions were found with gunshot and stab wounds in waters off California, Oregon and Washington. 955
