OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. The facility was designed to maximize food recovery and preservation with specialty equipment installed throughout.Gillie's team will also be catering events to help support the program. 1475

NYE COUNTY, Nevada — Famed Love Ranch brother owner and GOP Assembly candidate Dennis Hof has died.The Nye County Sheriff's Office confirmed Hof's death Tuesday morning at the Love Ranch in Crystal, outside of Pahrump. Detectives and deputies are currently on scene and conducting an investigation into his death. Hof was 72 years old. His cause of death is unknown at this time.  Hof's campaign manager Chuck Muth first tweeted about his death.  489

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A sales tax increase approved by voters in November took effect Monday in the City of Oceanside. The city put Measure X on the ballot last fall to raise the tax rate from 7.75 to 8.25 percent. Voters passed the measure, 55 percent to 44 percent. The estimated revenues are expected to bring in million annually, according to city officials.New tax revenues, minus a state administrative fee, will go to the city. The half-cent sales tax was designed to provide money for first responders, pothole maintenance, graffiti clean-up, and public infrastructure projects. The tentative spending plan for the revenues includes an additional Homeless Outreach team, Crime Suppression team, road repairs, and a new police station at the beach."We are grateful to the Citizens of Oceanside for approving Measure X and are working to ensure that they receive tangible enhanced public safety services and infrastructure improvements," said Assistant City Manager Deanna Lorson in a statement to 10News.Measure X is set to expire in seven years. (KGTV) — An investigation is underway to find a mail thief who appears to be targeting military families living on Camp Pendleton.A few weeks ago, Jessica, a Marine wife who lives on the base, went to her mailbox and saw a card from a friend in Arkansas."Opened up my card, and after I opened it, I realized there was a slit down the side," said Jessica.After a closer look, Jessica realized someone had been in her mail."A clean cut down the side. Didn't get caught on anything. A machine didn't make this ... Just irritated. It's an invasion of privacy," said Jessica.Jessica says her card never did contain any cash or gift cards, but others on base haven't been as lucky."They're furious, and they want something done," said Jessica.Jessica says on various Facebook pages connected to the base, hundreds have posted photos of tampered mail received in the past two months. The envelopes are usually missing cash, gift cards or checks."Pretty disgusting. Pretty shameful ... It's no accident it's happening to us. Military families are an easy target. We're not with our families. Families make up for it by sending us a little extra, definitely for our kids," said Jessica.So what is the commonality when it comes to the mail? It's processed and delivered by the Postal Service. The closest post office is about a mile-and-a-half from the base.The Postal Inspection Service confirms they've begun an investigation, along with an internal probe.
