Komen San Diego Race for the Cure.The event will raise funds for Komen's breast cancer programs, including mammography, financial assistance to patients and meal delivery.An opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., and the 5K run and 1K walk/run begin at 8 a.m. at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street on the west side of Balboa Park.According to Komen, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego and one dies daily from the disease.However, the survival rate is nearly 99 percent if the most common form of breast cancer is detected early, Komen officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An SUV struck and killed a 63-year-old woman as she was crossing a street in the Talmadge area, police said Tuesday.It happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the 4600 block of El Cajon Boulevard, between 46th and 47th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 79-year-old man was driving a 2008 Lexus SUV westbound on El Cajon Boulevard near Menlo Avenue when he struck the pedestrian as she was attempting to cross El Cajon Boulevard southbound outside a crosswalk, Buttle said.The woman was trapped under the SUV before crews freed her and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the officer said. The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.The SUV driver remained at the scene and intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Buttle said. 824

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman whose Nissan Versa ended up underneath a semi-truck on Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday escaped serious injury and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said. Heidi Farst, 56, of El Cajon was driving westbound on I-8 near Main Street when her compact car was rear-ended by another vehicle just before 6 a.m. Farst's car then collided with the semi-truck, flipped over and landed upside down underneath the rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. Farst was freed from the wreckage and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for what were described as minor injuries, a CHP dispatcher said. She was then booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of DUI, according to Garrow. No other injuries were reported. The crash triggered lane closures and a SigAlert. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man and a toddler were hospitalized with minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle Friday night in Rolando, San Diego police said Saturday.The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Friday on El Cajon Boulevard near 72nd Street, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.The two pedestrians were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
