The only volunteer fire department in Hamilton, a small community in Monroe County, Mississippi, was destroyed in this weekend's devastating tornadoes. The tornado hit Monroe County on Saturday night, said CNN meteorologist Gene Norman. It was one of about six tornadoes to hit the state this weekend. One person in Monroe was killed and 10 people were injured. This weekend's massive storm system ravaged areas from Texas to Mississippi. Seven people died because of the severe weather, including the person in Mississippi, four people in Texas and two in Louisiana.Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency Sunday for areas affected by the severe weather.A photo of the destroyed fire station shows debris strewn all over and trucks standing in place underneath.Terry Tucker, Monroe's fire coordinator, said on Sunday he was alerted to the fate of the fire department's building around 11 p.m. Saturday."We took a direct hit," one firefighter told Tucker over the radio. "The fire station (is) gone."No firefighters were killed or injured, Tucker said.Tucker said the Hamilton department was the only one in the immediate area of the small community of about 1,500 people. The other nearest station is 14 miles away, Tucker said."It's hard to fathom, the fire department is gone," he said. "The people will have a long recovery. The fire department basically has to start over. They have good manpower but they have to start the station all over."While the building is gone, Tucker said the department was able to salvage some gear and the trucks are still there but damaged.Along with the fire department's building, Saturday's tornado also destroyed multiple homes and a retail center. 1716
The Army Corp of Engineers is looking at more than 300 facilities nationwide that it could turn into hospitals.New York City’s Javits Convention Center opened as a temporary hospital on Monday. Thousands of beds are now set up to receive patients who are not suffering from COVID-19.The field hospital is staffed with hospital units from Fort Campbell and Fort Hood.Wayne Brackin, the CEO of Kidz Medical Services, has experience with field hospitals and hospital hurricane responses in Florida. He says the Army can set up a field hospital in just weeks. “It will have the feeling of being in a mass unit,” said Brackin. “You'll come into a different kind of facility. They'll be higher levels of security. You're clearly in most cases going to be going into a structure that's been built and will have a lot of components that will look like a very sophisticated version of a tent.”Brackin says an advantage of an existing structure is it's typically climate controlled. The Army is sending field hospitals to Washington state and New Jersey. It says they'll be running by April 2.Navy hospital ships that arrived in New York and outside Los Angeles have started accepting non-COVID-19 patients.A field hospital also opened Tuesday in New York City’s Central Park. It's run by Christian humanitarian aid organization Samaritan's Purse. The group usually brings doctors to extreme medical situations around the world. The Central Park field hospital is designed as a respiratory care unit. The House Judiciary Committee will request documents on Monday from President Donald Trump's oldest son, his business and more than 60 individuals in his administration, the panel's chair said Sunday. In an interview with ABC News' "This Week," Rep. Jerry Nadler said the requests for documents are to "begin investigations, to present the case to the American people about obstruction of justice, about corruption and abuse of power."The New York Democrat said the full list of individuals and entities would be released Monday, but he mentioned Donald Trump Jr. and Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg.Nadler also said the list would likely include former White House chief of staff John Kelly and former White House counsel Don McGahn."Impeachment's a long way down the road," said Nadler, whose panel would begin any impeachment process. "We don't have the facts yet, but we're going to initiate the proper investigations."Asked if he thought President Trump had obstructed justice, Nadler replied, "Yes, I do. It's very clear that the President obstructed justice."Since taking power in the wake of November's midterm elections, House Democrats have vowed to investigate Trump's presidency and business as they await the special counsel Robert Mueller investigation's findings. As special counsel Robert Mueller wraps up his Russia probe, federal investigators have focused on conflicting public statements by President Trump and his team that could be seen as an effort to influence witnesses and obstruct justice, people familiar with the investigation told CNN.Critics pointed to the President's firing of then-FBI Director James Comey in 2017 as a potential obstruction of justice, as Trump told NBC News he was thinking about the Russia investigation when he decided to remove Comey.Besides Comey's firing, prosecutors appear to be examining Trump's role in crafting the misleading Air Force One statement in 2017 on the now-infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians attended by Trump Jr.Another episode centers on Trump's attempt to have his then-White House counsel McGahn dispute news reports that he threatened to quit over Trump's pressure to oust Mueller, CNN previously reported.Weisselberg was granted immunity in August by federal prosecutors for providing information on former Trump attorney Michael Cohen's role in hush money payments to women alleging affairs with Trump. He has repeatedly denied having affairs with the women. But Cohen's hearing before the House Judiciary Committee last week piqued congressional Democrats' interest in hearing from Weisselberg, as Cohen said the Trump Organization official had insight into Trump's tax filings. 2716
