CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - It takes a lot to run a robot. Engineers need to fix and maintain the creation. Coders need to tell it what to do. Battery techs make sure power is abundant. Managers organize data.It sounds like a lot. But a group of Chula Vista students has it down to a science.Rancho Del Rey Middle School's Royal Robotics team is a "well-oiled machine," as they like to put it. And generally, some of them will be tournament champions so we do have to make our robot highly effective to combat them,"And the team has put in long hours to perfect their creation."They take the robot home with their parents' help and work on the weekends," teacher Kirk Braito said. "It's just an amazing amount of dedication."Thanks to the completeness of their design notebook, which houses all their data, the team hopes to grab the award for best design and have a championship banner to hang at Rancho Del Rey.But the team faces one last obstacle, getting to Kentucky."It is an enormous financial obligation that I'm trying desperately to make up because the funding is basically all us," Braito said.The team has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses and has raised almost half of their goal. CINCINNATI -- The phone call stole Angel Goss' breath.When her children came to investigate the sound of their mother jumping up and down in their home, she could only point at the phone. A match, she tried to tell them. They found a match. She would receive a donor kidney. The search for one her body could accept had lasted 10 years, much of it spent in hours-long sessions of dialysis.Multiple blood transfusions and a diagnosis of lupus, which contributed to her kidney failure, meant she needed to find a donor who met exacting standards: They needed to be alive, and they needed to belong to the 2 percent of the population with a compatible blood type. After a decade, that donor had finally materialized. Ohio State University Hospital found them."I was overjoyed," Goss said. "You know, I've been waiting too long for this. I didn't know how to contain myself because I was just so excited.”She was lying in a hospital bed, ready for surgery, when she learned it wouldn't come. Hurricane Michael stalled the flight carrying her kidney in South Carolina, where the organ spoiled in storage as the ice around it melted, and Goss was speechless again. "I didn't want to hear it," Goss said. "I didn't want to believe it. (I thought,) ‘It's going to come, and when it comes, it's going to be just for me.'"I didn't want to speak to anybody. I felt like everything bad follows me."Goss continues to wake up early for four-hour dialysis sessions every day. She said she forces herself to believe everything happens for a reason, even if she can't see it, and keep her loved ones in mind as she lives each moment to the fullest. She will remain at the top of the kidney transplant list, hoping for another rare donor to come along. In the meantime, she said she hopes sharing her story will encourage those with healthy kidneys to become organ donors. "I just want that second chance," she said. "I want to feel good again." 1975

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six people were arrested Tuesday during a demonstration over flu shots for detained migrants.More than 100 people, many of whom are medical professionals, gathered outside Chula Vista's Customs and Border Protection headquarters to call for a meeting over healthcare policies for detainees. Demonstrators say doctors offering free flu clinic services at the Chula Vista Border Patrol Station on Monday were turned away. The group added that a free pilot program was also rejected by the Trump Administration.Tuesday, some protesters took to lying across the headquarters driveway during the demonstration, prompting authorities to declare the gathering an unlawful assembly. Demonstrators were given six minutes to disperse, before officers arrested the six individuals.Demonstrators say the lack of flu clinic services for those inside detention centers poses a health risk to them and the public."Flu deaths are preventable and large scale vaccination is not unprecedented. Our government has undertaken similar efforts in the past and has the resources to do so now," doctor Marie DeLuca, of Doctors For Camp Closures, said. "This is about a complete disregard for human life, government accountability and a failure of our government to protect not only the people held in detention, but all people within our borders.”A CBP spokesperson said in a statement to 10News it has never been their practice to administer vaccines and they are making efforts to clear holding facilities within 72 hours:"Individuals in CBP custody should generally not be held for longer than 72 hours in either CBP hold rooms or holding facilities. However, that is still the goal and the agency, working with partners, is still doing everything it can to move people out of temporary CBP holding facilities.As a law enforcement agency, and due to the short term nature of CBP holding and other logistical challenges, operating a vaccine program is not feasible. CHOLLAS VIEW (KGTV) - A short pursuit ended in a crash near Gompers Preparatory School Saturday night.The pursuit started around 6:45 p.m. at 4700 Castana Street in Chollas View, police said. The suspect was wanted for speeding when they took off. The pursuit ended a few minutes later when the suspect crashed less than a mile away into a railing at Gompers Preparatory School. The suspect was arrested. No one was injured. Gompers Preparatory School is a public charter school that operates in cooperation with the University of California, San Diego.   588
