SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight residents and two pets were displaced Tuesday when a fire caused by electrical failure broke out in a Grantville apartment building, authorities said.The noninjury blaze was reported shortly after 5:35 a.m. at a two-story apartment building on Reflection Drive, in The Village Mission Valley apartment complex off Santo Road and Friars Road, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the roof of one apartment building, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said, adding that all residents were able to escape safely before firefighters arrived.Firefighters knocked down the flames and kept the fire contained to an apartment on the second floor, Munoz said. A time of knockdown was not available.One other apartment on the second floor and one apartment on the first floor sustained smoke and water damage, she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lyft opened a 35,000-square-foot "Driver Center" Tuesday in a former Toys "R" Us store in Bay Park to provide a one-stop location for its drivers to go for vehicle repairs, maintenance and other support services."We're proud to open one of Lyft's first Driver Centers in San Diego to further meet our drivers' needs directly," said Lyft Southern California General Manager Hao Meng. "We know that maintaining a vehicle can add up and our goal is to service drivers' vehicles in a timely and affordable way so they can get back on the road."The facility at 1240 W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday.The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim.
