SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – It’s been said that dogs are a man’s best friend. Jared Johnstun is lucky enough to have not one, but two furry sidekicks.“Yes, you’re good boys aren’t you?” Johnstun said to his two goldendoodles sitting beside him on the floor. “They’re a little tired today too.”Jared Johnston knows a thing or two about being worn out.“I’m a physician who works mainly in the intensive care unit,” Johnstun said. “I’m a pulmonary critical care doctor.”Since COVID hit, the doctor has been going non-stop.“You know, for 10 days or 12 days in a row, I’m in the hospital every day, some days I’m there for 12 hours,” Johnstun said.As a doctor, he’s seen it all but for him, the pandemic is different.“It was definitely a shock to me,” he said.About two months in, Dr. Johnstun, used to living alone, suddenly felt like something was wrong.“You know, I just realized that I wasn’t doing well,” he said.So, he made a move he never expected.“I’m a 40-year-old ICU doctor and I live with my parents,” he said with a chuckle.Johnstun now lives with his mom and dad near the hospital he works at.“I tried to do all this by myself initially and I just couldn’t do it,” Johnstun said.He’s not alone.“In medicine, there has been this long tradition of everything is fine and we got this,” said Dr. Amy Locke, the Chief Wellness Officer at the University of Utah Hospital.Doctors and nurses are facing challenges unlike many have ever seen in their career. That is why hospitals like the University of Utah are turning to wellness officers.“It’s kind of like counseling,” Locke said. “You know, checking in, making sure people are doing OK and that they’re able to access resources.”At the University of Utah’s resiliency center, their resources are being used more than ever.“Our interactions with people have more than doubled over the last six months,” Locke said.Doctors like Johnstun are applauding the efforts made by hospital groups throughout the country.“In general, the mental health of the physicians and nurses and all health care workers is something that really hasn’t been talked about.”He said talking to other health care workers on the COVID-19 front lines has been eye opening.“We’re talking about what is it going to look like in 10 years when you have a whole generation of doctors and nurses who have PTSD?” Johnstun said.As for Johnstun, he has found healing in being around family, practicing yoga, meditating and exercising.Even after all he has been through in the past eight months, he believes he’s exactly where he should be.“(Doctors) have found a calling and a purpose in fighting COVID and taking care of the people who have COVID,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin has opened a commanding 20-point lead over Republican challenger Brian Maryott in coastal North County's 49th district, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows Levin leading Maryott 56 percent to 36 percent, with the remainder undecided. It's an increase over the 49 percent to 37 percent lead Levin had over Maryott in a prior poll taken in mid-September. The district stretches from Del Mar into parts of southern Orange County."It's all over but the shouting," said political analyst John Dadian, who said the district has become increasingly democratic over the last 15 years. "It was getting bluer gradually, and now, the last election cycle and I believe this one, we're going to see the fruit come to bear."Levin won the 49th District seat in 2018 after Republican Darrell Issa decided not to seek re-election after nearly two decades. Issa is now running for Congress in east county's 50th District, which leans Republican. "We've seen a lot of the communities that have shifted to more in the democratic party since 2016 are these more suburban, well-educated communities like many of the communities in California's 49th," said Stephen Goggin, a lecturer in the political science department at San Diego State University. The poll of 514 likely voters shows Levin getting the support of 68 percent of independents, with Maryott, a San Juan Capistrano councilman, getting just 15 percent of them. Both are getting the bulk of their backing from their own parties. In an interview Tuesday, Levin said he was not taking anything for granted, and that the only poll that matters is the one on election day. "This is the home stretch of an election, all hands on deck, leave no stone unturned. That's the only way I know and that's what we're going to do over the next three weeks," Levin said. Maryott's campaign released a statement saying the race is much closer than what this poll shows. "We see it firsthand, on a daily basis: as more voters uncover Mike Levin’s extreme record, support for Brian Maryott increases significantly. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was stabbed early today and he walked into a Kerny Mesa hotel for help.The stabbing was reported at 2:05 a.m. in the 5400 block of Kearny Mesa Road, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The wounded man walked into the lobby of the Marriott hotel to get help, Heims said.The victim was taken to a hospital for a stab wound in his body that is not believed life-threatening, he said.He described his assailant as a bald male, about 6 feet tall, with tattoos. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old man was jailed Thursday morning on suspicion of seriously injuring his roommate during a fight at a College Area home, police said.It happened shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on College Avenue near Pontiac Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The 41-year-old man and his 42-year-old male roommate got into an argument for unknown reasons and the argument turned violent, Buttle said.During the fight, the younger roommate punched the 42-year-old man several times in the head, the officer said.Officers responded to the home and took the 41-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, into custody without incident, Buttle said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said. 829
