SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s not the new uniform that sells to thousands of adoring fans.  However, San Diego Gas & Electric’s new employee uniforms could save customers hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.All of SDG&E’s 1,800 employees that work in the field will have new uniforms by the end of the year.“The new uniforms have an embroidered logo on them. The other ones had a patch, which potentially could be removed,” said SDG&E Gas Training Supervisor Scott Hazlett.Hazlett said that embroidered logo replaces a patch worn on uniforms.  He said scammers could take the patch and put it onto any clothing. Hazlett said the embroidered logo is harder for scammers to duplicate.An SDG&E spokeswoman said someone tries to scam a customer almost every day.  The new uniforms give customers another layer of proof that they’re dealing with a legitimate SDG&E employee.Hazlett added any customer with doubts should always ask for identification and they should call SDG&E directly at 1-800-411-7343 to confirm they are dealing with an employee.The new uniforms are also lighter weight and can protect employees better from sparks and fire.“It feels great to know that the company really values its safety,” said Hazlett. 1263

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Inside Richard J. Donovan State Prison's 30-foot concrete walls, metal doors, and electrified fence is the Echo Yard. It's drawn attention as one of the state's most innovative programs for bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.The Echo Yard, the state's first non-designated yard, also aims to keep released inmates out of prison.Around 50 percent of people convicted of a crime in California are sent back to prison within three years, according to a 2019 state auditor report. Members of Echo Yard get greater access to self-help, educational, vocational, and rehabilitative programs through courses like anger management, victim awareness, job hunting, and money management. Early recruitment efforts were sluggish when the program was introduced a few years ago.While the prospect of better resources and a possible early release sounds promising, inmates had difficulty embracing the concept of sharing spaces with a potential rival."When we first interviewed maybe about 900 guys, we probably got about 30 of them that said, 'yeah, I'll give it a try' ... because they know prison politics are alive and well," said Daniel Paramo, a former warden at RJD.WATCH: Menendez brothers help paint massive mural as part of innovative prison programThe rules in the Echo Yard are far removed from the prison politics and policies made up by inmates designed to help keep the peace. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
