The Southeastern Conference decided Thursday that they are only playing SEC teams this season amid the coronavirus pandemic.The SEC will play 10-conference games. They also decided to push their kickoff date to September 26 and the Championship Game will be played on December 19."This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a news release. The State of Utah sent face masks showing a handgun and controversial political image to a Salt Lake City family.The free masks are part of the “A Mask For Every Utahn” campaign, where federal COVID-19 money purchased more than two million masks to stop the spread of the virus.“I was just shocked,” said Chrstine Passey-Spencer outside her Rose Park home.Two masks delivered to the family show an American flag with a handgun printed across them with “Don't Tread on Me” written below a coiled rattlesnake.“I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this and this is very politically charged speech,” Passey-Spencer said.The “Don't Tread on Me” image stems from the Revolutionary War but has become controversial in recent years. The Gadsden Flag has been used by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists.In 2016, it was deemed to have “racially-tinged” messaging in some contexts by the federal government.More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights.“We hope this is an isolated incident that we just missed these couple of masks,” said Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s Ben Hart, who oversees the state’s mask program.Since April, the state purchased millions of masks from local and international manufacturers.Hart admits about 100 of the “Don't Tread on Me” masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them “inappropriate” and attempted to set all of them aside.“We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. The Senate is set to move forward with its version of the annual defense policy bill known as the National Defense Authorization Act -- marking the latest step for a key piece of legislation that has been passed by Congress for 55 straight years.At a time where passing bills is often challenged by the deep partisan divide and competing political factions on Capitol Hill, it can be difficult to understand why the NDAA would be any different.But as the measure that sets military policy on issues such as Guantanamo Bay, buying weapons, pay raises for service members and even the endangered status of the Sage Grouse, the NDAA is considered of one the few must-pass bills left in Congress.So what makes it so important?One of the most obvious reasons is the money.The NDAA authorizes levels of defense spending -- an amount between that will total between 0 and 0 billion for the next fiscal year that begins on October 1 -- and sets the Pentagon policies under which that money will be spent.This year's bill is expected to authorize a major hike in military spending and even exceed the billion defense budget increase requested by President Donald Trump for 2018 that aimed for more aircraft and ships.In July, the House of Representatives passed their 6 billion version of the bill which included billion more in defense spending than the Trump administration requested.The Senate's bill is expected to authorize a similar amount based on the mark up completed by the armed services committee, led by Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, in June.If the Senate's bill passes as expected then both houses of Congress will come together to vote on a final version. A vote in the Senate is scheduled Monday.But the fight over the size of the defense budget is just getting started, however, as Senate Democrats have vowed to block major increases to defense spending without equal increases to domestic programs.That fight will occur later this year over the defense appropriations bill, which is a separate piece of legislation that allocates spending for the Pentagon.In addition to authorizing increased military spending, the NDAA will set Pentagon policy on several key issues including troop level increases for the service branches and render a decision on a controversial new "Space Corps" program that was included in the House version of the bill but left out by the Senate.The program was also opposed by the White House and the Air Force.There will also be several controversial issues that will likely be left out of the NDAA including an amendment that would block Trump's ban on transgender service members and the proposed repeal of the 2001 and 2002 war authorizations that the US military uses to fight terrorism across the globe. 2776

The Wisconsin Supreme Court said Thursday it will not hear President Donald Trump's lawsuit, which had been requested to overturn election results in two Wisconsin counties.The lawsuit sought to overturn 200,000 ballots in Wisconsin. The decision from the Supreme Court comes just days after the Wisconsin Election Commission officially declared Joe Biden as the winner of Wisconsin."What we had is an abuse of the absentee process, dramatically in Dane and Milwaukee County,” said Jim Troupis, attorney for the Trump campaign.The lawsuit specifically focused on absentee ballots that were cast both through the mail and in person.The suit aimed to dismiss absentee ballots where the clerks' offices "inserted missing information,” people cast ballots "claiming Indefinite Confinement status" even if they "no longer qualified,” and absentee ballots "improperly cast or received at ‘Democracy in the Park’ events,” which were held in Madison.Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Election Commission have said the Trump Administration is required to file the lawsuit in circuit court, not the state Supreme Court.This story was originally published by Julia Marshall at WTMJ. 1183
