LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Barron Hilton, the hotelier and philanthropist who led the Hilton hotel chain, has died in Los Angeles at age 91.Hilton, who succeeded his father, Conrad Hilton, as president and chief executive officer of Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1966 and served in that capacity for 30 years, died Thursday at his home, according to an obituary provided by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. He was invited by his father to join Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1954 as a vice president, the foundation said. After taking over as president and CEO, "he was known for creating shareholder value and expanding through innovative real estate transactions, including franchising and a bold move into the Las Vegas gaming market," the statement said. "From 1966 to 1996, he generated an average annual rate of return to shareholders of 15% with dividends."Hilton was the founding owner of the Los Angeles Chargers of the American Football League."Simply put, the modern NFL would not be what it is today without the vision of Barron Hilton," Chargers owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos said.Under Hilton's leadership, the team, which moved to San Diego in 1961 following its inaugural season, won five divisional titles and one AFL championship during his six years as owner. He was also instrumental in forging the 1966 merger with the NFL that created the Super Bowl, according to the foundation obituary. As a condition for succeeding his father as Hilton Hotel Corp.'s president and CEO, the younger Hilton sold controlling interest of the team in 1966 for million, then a record for a professional sports franchise, according the obituary. In 2007, Hilton joined the Giving Pledge and announced he had committed 97% of his wealth to the philanthropic work of the Hilton Foundation. His planned gift is projected to increase the foundation's endowment to .3 billion. In his spare time, Hilton enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying and was known as a "skillful and conservative pilot," the foundation said.Hilton was born in Dallas on Oct. 23, 1927 and joined the United States Navy when he was 17.Hilton was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, who died in 2004 at age 76. "Ever since I was a little girl I have looked up to him as a businessman."I feel so grateful to have had such an incredible mentor. I always wanted to make him proud. The last conversation we had a few days ago I told him how much of an impact he had on my life. His spirit, heart and legacy will live on in me. 2782

Live Nation, the parent company of Ticket Master and the owner of dozens of concert venues across the country, said in a press release Wednesday that it was working with local governments in the hopes that its venues could be used as polling places in the upcoming election. So far, Live Nation says that four of its concert venues — The Wiltern and Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, Emo’s in Austin and the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta — will be used as polling stations this November. A fifth venue, The Fillmore in Philadelphia, "is in the final stages of the vetting process."In addition, the company says it is working with local officials across the country to "determine the feasibility" of using 100-plus Live Nation venues as polling places. Live Nation did not specify which locations were being considered, or how many venues they believed would be approved as polling locations.Live Nation added it was partnering with More Than A Vote in their efforts to expand polling locations. More Than A Vote is a coalition of Black athletes led by LeBron James that are aiming to increase participation in the 2020 election among minorities. As part of an agreement to restart the 2020 NBA season, James and other players pushed for the league to adopt a provision in which it would explore ways that teams could use their arenas as polling places during the 2020 election. According to CBS News, about a dozen NBA arenas will host voters on election day, and several more will serve as early voting centers ahead of Nov. 3.However, several NBA teams have been told that they are not able to participate. The Miami Heat were recently told by Miami-Dade County in Florida that a nearby museum center would be used as a polling place instead of their arena. 1765

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - The man accused of killing two men, including an LA County Sheriff's Deputy, and going on a four day crimes spree has mounting charges.Thursday Rhett Nelson, 30, from Utah was to be arraigned in LA court, the proceedings postponed until Jully 22.The District Attorney announced more charges are piled on to Nelson's case, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and two counts of second degree robbery.Nelson was taken into custody around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday by Long Beach police in the 2400 block of Granada Avenue and later turned over to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigators, who arrested him. San Diego Police say Nelson is under investigation in connection with five separate convenience store robberies across San Diego County. From June 7-9, four 7-Eleven stores and a Circle K were held up at gunpoint. In each case, the clerk turned over cash and the man left the scene before police arrived.Officers are reviewing surveillance video from the San Diego cases.Nelson is suspected in the shooting of Deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano, who was at the counter of a Jack in the Box restaurant at 2531 W. Valley Blvd. in Alhambra around 5:45 p.m. Monday when he was shot in the back of the head in what sheriff's officials believe was a random attack. Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore said Nelson is also suspected in a fatal shooting that occurred about an hour earlier in the 1900 block of East Seventh Place, between Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street, in the downtown area. That shooting, apparently done from inside a vehicle, left Dmitry Koltsov, 30, dead. After killing Solano police say Nelson tried to kill a third man and robbed a Long Beach 7-Eleven and a Shell Gas Station. The sheriff's department on Wednesday released a booking photo of Nelson."Investigators believe there is a possibility suspect Rhett Nelson may have been involved in additional criminal incidents since entering California,'' according to the department. "With the public's interest in mind, the booking photo is being released in an effort to seek any possible additional victims.'' At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, sheriiff's Capt. Kent Wegener told reporters that Nelson walked into a Long Beach church around 10 a.m. Tuesday, called his father in Utah and talked about carrying out a pair of shootings. "During that call he referred to committing murder in Southern California, obviously concerning his father,'' Wegener said. "The father called (the) Long Beach Police Department to report what his son had told him. Long Beach did a reverse directory on the phone number provided by the father and responded to that church.'' Pastor Brad Paradee said when Nelson arrived at First Nazarene Church at 2280 Clark Ave., he considered him homeless. "I was with him for one to two hours,'' Paradee told the Daily News. "I gave him food and coffee, let him use my phone to call home and take a shower. He had the gun with him the whole time.'' A short time later, Nelson was seen driving away from the church, and police took him into custody him without incident after he pulled into the driveway of a home on Granada Avenue, Wegener said. The hat and maroon shirt the gunman wore during the Jack in the Box shooting "were clearly visible in the rear seat of his car,'' he said. The suspect and the vehicle -- a Kia Sorento SUV -- also matched the description of those involved in the shooting, according to the captain. A revolver "matching the gun used in the assault'' was found inside the vehicle when a search warrant was served, Wegener said. Nelson's father, Bradley, issued a statement Tuesday regarding his son's arrest. "My wife Jean and I, along with our family, are saddened beyond words to hear of the shooting of Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Solano, and to learn that our son Rhett is being held in connection with this horrifying and senseless attack,'' Bradley Nelson said. "We are cooperating fully with authorities and will provide them with all information they request concerning Rhett and his struggles. We ask that people please pray for Deputy Solano and his family.''There was no word on why Solano was shot or if the gunman knew he was a sheriff's deputy. Solano, 50, was not in uniform and was not carrying a gun or badge or anything that would indicate he was a law enforcement officer, authorities said. Solano -- a 13-year department veteran described as a dedicated family man -- had just dropped off his mother's vehicle to be serviced at a Jiffy Lube near the Jack in the Box restaurant where he was shot, Villanueva said. He noted that Solano's father had recently died, and the deputy was the sole provider for his mother. "We're praying for his recovery,'' Villanueva said of the wounded deputy. "This is the part of this job that I don't relish and I always dreaded this day would happen. It happened way too soon.'' Villanueva described Solano as a "kind-hearted, generous person'' who was always willing to help others. Sheriff's officials said Nelson's relatives in Utah had recently reported him missing, with Wegener telling reporters that the suspect had arrived in Southern California around the first week of June. Nelson's father posted a photo of his son on Facebook on May 30 asking for help finding him, noting he had last been seen in southern Utah in his white 2012 Kia Sorento and that he had a history of drug abuse."Our 30 year old son Rhett Nelson disappeared 3 days ago, taking nothing with him but his phone, leaving all his clothing and his computer behind,'' Bradley Nelson wrote. "We've had no contact with him, his phone is dead or off since then. He has a history of opiate abuse and has been clean for about 6 months, but we know what a terrible struggle that is. We are praying for his safe return.'' By the first week of June, Rhett had made contact with relatives and told them he was in California, Capt. Mike Giles of the St. George Police Department told the Daily News. Moore said detectives developed a connection between the "senseless attack'' on the deputy and the fatal shooting in downtown Los Angeles that occurred around 4:50 p.m. Monday. Moore said a 30-year-old man was standing in the 1900 block of East Seventh Place "when a vehicle arrived and, according to other witnesses, an individual inside the vehicle had a brief exchange with our victim, gunfire erupted and our victim sustained at least one gunshot wound and died at the scene.''"We are led to believe that he (Nelson) is potentially responsible. We are led to that belief on the basis of the suspect Mr. Nelson's physical appearance, including some of his clothing, as well as the vehicle description,'' Moore said. Nelson was being held in lieu of million bail, according to sheriff's inmate records. Nelson had a misdemeanor drug conviction in Salt Lake City in December 2014, but no other criminal history. 6925

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The search continued Monday for a man suspected of punching a 47-year-old man at a Dodger Stadium parking lot and seriously injuring him, leaving him on life support at County/USC Medical Center, according to his family and media reports. Rafael Reyna, a father of four, was identified by his wife, Christel, in multiple media interviews as the man who fell to the ground when he was punched and suffered a fractured skull as the crowd was leaving following the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the end of 13 innings early Saturday, in the longest regular-season game in Dodger Stadium history -- 6 hours, 5 minutes. She told NBC4 she was on Facetime with Rafael Reyna when she heard a woman yell ``Why did you do that?'' as a man approached her husband and cursed at him. Then she heard a crack and the screen went black. She said her husband has swelling and bleeding on the brain. Later in an interview with ABC7, Christel Reyna made a tearful plea for anyone who saw what happened to contact police. ``Somebody needs to come forward,'' she said. ``I know people saw it. I heard them.'' She and an adult son have been with her husband at the hospital, but Christel Reyna said she has not told her younger children, ages 11 to 15. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Reyna at www.gofundme.com/dodger-stadium-attack-victim-on-life-support. Initially, Los Angeles police investigated the incident as an altercation but have now labeled it an assault. The suspect, who got away, is described as a man in his 20s who might have driven off in a white SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner, police said. The Dodgers security team is working with police and the organization released the following statement Saturday: ``Last night, an altercation occurred suddenly between two men who were leaving the stadium,'' the statement said. ``One of the men was injured as a result of the altercation. A witness immediately reported the incident to stadium personnel, and emergency medical technicians were promptly dispatched to provide medical assistance at the scene. The matter is now being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Dodgers are cooperating fully with the investigation.'' In 2011, an attack outside Dodger Stadium left Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz severely brain-damaged. The two men who attacked him pleaded guilty in 2014 and one, Lonnie Sanchez, was sentenced to eight years in prison while the other, Marvin Norwood, received a four-year sentence. The incident prompted increased security measures at the stadium. Anyone with information on this weekend's attack was asked to call the LAPD. 2667

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty Los Angeles County deputy was shot early Sunday morning while he was driving and returned fire at the suspect. The sheriff's deputy's name has not been released. Officials say Sunday he was struck once in a lower extremity and is expected to survive his injuries. Authorities say the suspect remains at large and it’s not known if he was struck by gunfire before he ran away. The other two people in the deputy’s vehicle were not hurt. Additional information, such as if the deputy knew the gunman, was not immediately available. 584
